wind screen

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

How good or otherwise is the fit with the Xantia glass?

I own both a Xantia and an XM and can see them side by side. I'm really not sure a Xantia screen will fit tbh.

I'll measure it shortly but off the top of my head, I'd say no.

According to the Halfords website, the XM's use a pair of 22" windscreen wipers, the Xantia uses a 24" on the drivers side and an 18" on the passengers side.

UPDATE:

I've just measured both windscreens. Only from top to bottom as I'm on my own and don't want to risk scratching either car to measure the curve. Initially, looking at the screens, the curves at the edges at TOTALLY different, the XM's screen curves more towards the A pillar then the Xantia screen does.

The XM screens:

From top to bottom:

Edges beside A Pillar - 750mm
Middle from scuttle to roof>= - 820mm

The Xantia screen:

Edges beside A Pillar - 770mm
Middle from scuttle to roof - 860mm

Just make sure if they are still going to go ahead with fitting it that they lay it on top before cutting your screen out.

A Xantia screen will never fit an XM. They have different Citroen part numbers for a reason.

I must say I was very surprised to hear the windscreens might be the same! The size and shape of the two cars are really quite different. Regards, Matthew T.

Where does this leave the windscreen situation. I have a 12” crack on the passenger side. I’ve had it injected to stop it worsening. The aesthetics aren’t good but I’d live with that over the entirely wrong windscreen. I’d be gutted if I’d gone ahead and then clearly ended up with the wrong thing. I asked in another thread and someone mentioned these days it’s possible to custom create a new windscreen for just about anything? Makes sense only issue might be cost. I’m imagining a trip to the breakers might still be an option?

New XM windscreens seem to be available still in France, not sure if they are current stock or NOS.

I had a new one fitted by a local firm about 3 years ago, i called them just now and they said they can get a screen no problem, will have to order it so would be a couple of days to get it but there is no issue with screens, the trouble is the windscreen rubber surround is no longer available as when i had mine fitted so you do not want some ham fisted fitter trashing your old one, make it clear to them that the rubber needs to be saved before they start!
I had to help the guy that did mine cut it out with the cheese wire, one man on each side of the screen when doing the top section, and carefully, the top rubber has a metal strip in it and if you bend it it will never sit right again.

My last XM new screen was fitted to an estate about 4 years ago.
Last time I used a national windscreen firm (Southampton branch) the glass was correct but the trimming appalling.
They refused to let me see the work in progress and took three attempts before I accepted the trimming.
By this stage the trim was set solid in windscreen glue so it was not possible to alter.
The glass had taken them 3 weeks to obtain.
As this was an insurance job they had to obtain parts from the UK or the costs would not be covered.
It seems many Insurance companies have a small clause about no liability for cars over 10 years old if parts are not easily available.

Since then two of the XM's have had secondhand screen replacements and one passenger side crack gluing.
One was arranged by Savoy to get the car an MOT before I collected it.
A local windscreen fitter swapped the screen from a scrap XM in the yard.
He also recovered the trim and reused it. There was no indication it had been reused.
Last autumn one of the cars had a major branching crack drivers side.
To get it through the MOT I got a local glass fitter to fit a secondhand screen that I supplied.
It took less than 30 minutes.
Side trims could be reused and the fitter used a Transit rubber top moulding.
This was one of the standard items they keep on the van.
Top trims for XM cars and Estates are vastly different in depth.
I asked about this and it appears that a wider standard trim could be found to fit an Estate.

There is a problem with the Citroen fixing for side trims.
The thin black "U" section with serrations provides the press down and lock in place.
The plastic becomes very brittle with age and falls to bits.
In this state a side trim is easily lost if the wind gets under it.
Not found a suitable replacement yet.
Gluing it needs very limited application in case it needs to come off again.

John
