Grey-white can be coolant (glycol) in combustion - but distinctive smell, though.
Produces lumpy running and poor starting, too.
Just a thought.

I'd vote on the air causing an issue as they rely heavily on the fuel to cool and if a big enough block of air hit at the wrong time it could all go to pot

unlike the Bosch units that seemingly take it in their stride and just drop power

I THINK i found the cause..

The intercooler to overfuel device on the front of the pump... on lucas pumps the fuel return is attached through a one way valve to the overfuel device...

When i removed the intercooler to overfuel device pipe.. fuel.. seemed present. I blew down it and it appeared to have fuel in it.. so.. im thinking one or two of two things... the one way valve failed allowing fuel in to the overfueling device.. or the diaphram in the overfuel device has buggered allowing fuel into the inlet pipes possibly over time to a point where it sucked the fuel in.

Pump and injectors swapped today and she shounded a whole 100% better just some some on over run.. ie throttle on rev up release pedal some smoke. I shall make some videos anyway.. so we are winning again. .
