I dont think they are better built but they do seem quieter than S1's, but then the black one is the MK1.5 which is regarded by some as the best model, my opinion would be go for the MK2 though

, yes i know, i wouldnt have it by choice but then i have mine as a toy, to look nice and play with, if it got propper use you really want the newer car, that and the MK2 looks cleaner in the photo's.

I think Onthecut has the key point.
Build quality differences were really quite small between Mk1 & Mk2 XM's.
Of much greater significance is the owner/maintainer input over the life of the car.
Have to examine the car and its paperwork to try to determine this.
Even then it is no easy task.
