XM 24V Again !

I asked him about the mileage - all he claims to know is that it has done 41,000 (ish) after the engine re-build. I think I would have asked what mileage it had done when buying it originally!

He's now put a note on the ad to say it's done approx 95,000!

I would suspect that potential buyers would have been and looked at it, I certainly wouldn't buy one without giving it a good prod, so judging by the price it has already reached there must be something to it. I doubt that if I polished up my black one to look like that, any one would offer that sort of money for it.

A very odd car i think, id not touch that at all, far too iffy.

The car has covered under 100K miles, so it should still be in good condition anyway. It should never have needed a new engine, maybe a auto box as they do go on V6s more than others i believe?

So fair enough, its had an engine which is shoudlnt have needed and a gearbox which it might have needed, but why on earth has it had a new speedo, reading only 4000 miles.

I doubt there is any way of knowing that the engine and gearbox has done the stated mileage nore if the car has covered under 100K miles, unless it has service history to back that up.

Its hardly ancient or high mileage so i dont see why its needed anything its had done, thats if anything has been done.

So thats probably why its back on again, with the same pictures too. I thought it reached a good price last time it was on, maybe a new owner is now selling it but they are the same pictures .

Id never try and sell a car on ebay, i have in the past and did not enjoy the experience. Cars sometimes appear expensive on there, depending on what car that is, but often they go for less than most cars advertised as a classified add, i guess thats the point. However there are so many time wasters its not something id want to get into. Ive never had a problem selling any car via private classified adverts so see no reason to list on ebay. Usually cars have sold fast but if i had a car hanging about which i really wanted to sell then i would consider ebay, but be prepared for the time wasters and tyre kickers.

I find a pretty good way of guestimating the mileage is to look at the steering wheel, the wear is pretty linear with mileage. If it has all its black finish in tact, its probably not done much more than 50k, slight wear, particularly at the top, 50 - 100k, wear over 25%, 100-150k and so on. The 292k I sold had little finish left.

I have never sold a car on ebay because I have only had XMs since ebay existed - and you don't sell them do you. I have however bought several and had some real bargains, the white estate I'm running now I paid £150.00 for with two new tyres and a new clutch, but they don't come up like that very often.

Sounds like a bargain your white one Peter, very nice find there Whats the mileage of that one?

Our white hatch has 86K and the steering wheel still has all of its finish, looks identical to that of the 32K miler, maybe very slightly shinier.

Depends on the roughness of the drivers hands too Its a good way of guessing though, also how shiny or worn the gearlever is and also how worn the rubber pedal covers are too.

The V6 does seem to be getting a lot of interest, maybe it will find a new owner this time around.

Possibly, but I've never seen any new ones for sale on ebay.

Chris - 149k when I bought it, the lowest mileage of the lot and it has the best hydraulic system, obviously well manitained. I did resemble a dust cart inside though, but its cleaned up nicely.

The gearbox is obviously the weakspot of the S2 24v V6. The 24v engine seems very reliable (easily clocking well into 6 figures). I'd guess that a gearbox replacement is why it might have had the engine replaced since the owner might have had a engine and gearbox complete to go back in.

Otherwise the only reason to have a problem with the 24v could be a cambelt. Although they can rev of 6000rpm they have generally a fairly unstressed time most reving no higher then 3000rpm.

The coils packs go as well. Otherwise the only other thing to note are normal XM things like rads which could I suppose cook a head gasket.

I must say though that the interest seems much deminished this time.
