Breaking : 1993 2.1 SED Auto

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

The nut ? I can turn the nut ;-). Just that the nut turns the bolt; and I can't see what arrangement is in place; the opposite end to the nut.

Got a 1/4" ratchet, a full set of extension bars, and a U/J, so no issue with getting access to the nut; it's the other end I've got a problem with.

Think I'll slide the seat back, pull the carpet up; and get the angle grinder out !

Go careful with the angry grinder.
The fuel pipes are right behind the metalwork you need to remove.

There is a hexagonal head on the other end of the bolt around 10mm I think that is slightly recessed into a cup but you should be able to get a spanner in hopefully! Regards, Matthew T.

The only way to a grinder in there to cut them is when the engine is rocked forward a bit. Thats how (when) I cut these.

Is it me; or is this a stupid design? What's wrong with a stud and nut affair? That way; if (WHEN) the nut seizes onto the stud; at least the nut and stud come out as one. I'd be fornicated, if I wanted to just replace the exhaust !

How about replacing the bolt etc with a stainless bolt, hex-headed . . . Might allow a long allen key onto the difficult end.
Or weld a bit mild steel rod/bar onto the old bolthead before it goes back in, which would stop rotation.
S/s or brass nut, too.

I think awkward manifold end fastenings are a long tradition in the motor industry. My 1935 Rover 10 was like it, and so was my 1959 Mini. With all of these, Fred-in-a-Shed could have designed better! Great photo: Man will not be beaten!

A mate, with a 1/4" T-bar, with extension, U/J, and 10mm socket.

Me, with a 1/4" ratchet, 2 extensions, and a 10mm socket.

...and a lot of patience.

XM has eaten one of my 10mm sockets (probably stuck to some crap, on the top of the sub-frame)
