My guess is that the gearbox mounted speed sensor went out with the single spoke steering wheel and other changes in around 1992 Russ and then from 1994/5 S2 cars have electronic speedos. There are probably similar numbers of early and late S1 cars around but your type might be slightly more common. Regards, Matthew T.

I have only had one of these mid cable sensor cars, it was a late TCT Onyx. Registered in '95. All others I am almost sure didn't (can't remember what the K reg SD had though). I can't remember now what the difference of the cables where, but there is no cross compatibility with one of the cables and the electric sensor. Possibly there is a male end when a female end is needed and vice versa. I wonder if the LHD cars got this mod as on them the cable goes straight from the clocks through the dash straight onto the gearbox, no awkward joins or anything.

Hi i Need this sensor the cable one, any one knows where can I found it, it's tooooo wire
Mine looks good but on board computer is not working and the Lexia show this (permanent fault, vehicle speed sensor)

I may be well wrong here but I have a belief that two-pin speed sensors work with a small amplifier unit to provide a strong enough signal to drive the ECUs that need the speed signal. This is the case in the Pug 605 but I'm not sure about the early XMs. Maybe someone more knowledgeable could confirm please?
I'm thinking that if this is the case then the amplifier is more likely to be the faulty item than the sensor itself. Later Pugs that have the same arrangement, such as some 406 models, suffer quite frequent failure of this amplifier unit.
Three pin sensors do not need/have this amplifier.
I assume the speedo cables themselves are OK and the speedo is working?

Yes, the 2 pin sensors do have an amplifier box. I recently had to replace it as the trip computer wasn't working and the suspension was permanently in hard mode.
I used one from a Peugeot, they are identical except the Peugeot one needs three little nubs filed off and needs to be cable tied since it wont clip in to the XM's connector.
Sometimes they just have dry solder joints and need resoldering - a few 406 owners have fixed them this way. You can also test the speed sensor itself be removing it, connecting it to a multimeter and spinning it – you should see around 2-3 volts?

On RHD cars (not sure about LHD) it's up in the drivers footwell. You'll need to remove the carpet panel above the pedals and then the large plastic panel above, the parking brake handle will still be attached so just put the panel on the floor. Undo the two bolts on the cradle thing with the three or so small boxes attached, it just drops down a bit for better access. The amplifier box is the small black box about the size of a cigarette pack, has bitron video stamped on the top and the connector has 9 pins.
