Hi XMX
Its an average based mainly on a good number of cars and discussions with Paul who used to run the XM centre.
The range is quite wide 60k to 330k so you may be right about yours being above average.
There is usually no difference in the clutch feel even after it has started to smell and slip.
The hydraulic drive tends to mask any wear.
Alternating between cars as I do I can notice slight differences in bight height but would not with just a single one.
Holding 5th too long on a steep grade is ideal to identify the start of slipping.
It is not recommended to try that with cruise switched on.
If the clutch slips in cruise the ECU shuts the engine off.
Rather a shock when it happens in the outside lane.

Any car that has done high motorway mileage will have a perfect clutch.

I dont think cruise would shut the engine off, i think it would disengage it self at worst as the revs would rise too quickly compared to what it is expecting.

A hdi shouldn't cut its engine out dead as it's dangerous But They do under certain circumstances. . As most of us know mine did for years which is finally sorted.
I'd be inclined to listen to John as he has had many years of 2.5 Xm Xm owner ship and as far as I'm concerned knows what he is talking about.

We know that the cruise controls do nothing themselves, they are only switches to the computer. Could this mean that a 2.5 without cruise control (I know it wasn't available in the UK as such but it was in other markets, same injection ECU but no cruise control stalk and switch fitted) would exhibit the same cut out behavior?

Hi Gabor
The ECU programmes are the same across the 2.5 range XM and Pug 605.
There are 3 basic types but the differences are down to emission standards compliance and glow plug feeds.
I can supply full details by part number if required.
I agree that it is the ECU that caused the cut out.
The cruise circuitry on a 2.5 is just a set of 4 switches.
All these ECU's have cruise routines present.
On ignition switch on the ECU programme checks for the presence of various equipment including cruise.
It then sets itself up accordingly.
To add cruise to a non fitted 2.5 you just get and add the two dash switches.
At next ignition switch on the ECU then finds cruise present and enables it.
In the case of clutch slip the ECU can only get confused if cruise is enabled.
The problem comes when the ECU requested engine revs and the achieved road speed start to diverge dramatically.
At first the ECU calls for increasing revs which just increases slip.
When this happens the ECU then shuts down because values go outside its progammed limits.
The dash goes totally dead and engine cuts out.
It then goes through a startup routine but in my case the car speed had dropped from 70 to 25 before the engine reapplied power.
The road behind me was totally clear so I could see what would happen.
The overtaking move I was starting to make failed completely

You see I've tested it a few times by having the car put of gear on the flat and it doesn't turn the engine off but simply tries and then stops trying and the engine returns to idle.

Re: 1996 2.5TD VSX Green Estate F/S on E-bay
Ok, Ok, I know the setup very well, my 2.5 VSX came without cruise control switches, I retrofitted the switches and I have the full monty since then.
I still can't see anything in the circuit diagram that would provide a way for the ECU to do that. It can cut out the engine all right, of course, but not a complete dashboard blackout. I'd rather suspect some related and consequential problem in your case than a direct interaction of the ECU...
