I'll get the VIN tomorrow too. The car is still parked up and the MOT place, so i can't just nip out and check at the moment. The car being broken is a VSX, so could be later, and a completely different set up? For the MOT at the moment all I need is an exhaust (plenty on line), and the valve for the front pressure regulator. It only failed for a leak, so to me it seems like it could be repairable, changing an O ring or something along those lines?

Yes it can, there are only two 'O' rings that seal it or you could be lucky and a pipe fitting just wants nipping up, or it just needs a wipe off before it gets re-tested

The part you have been given is a sphere and it is too large for the XM, it would be OK for the centre front axle or you could use it for the pressure regulator but if fitting to the back i have found it makes the car a bit too soft.

Thanks Dean. Although I don't think I have the expertise to fix it myself.
Was up at the garage today, and got the VIN. I've ordered an exhaust system and CAT. So it's just a case of getting this leak sorted. I said to the guy at the garage that it should just be a case of replacing the O rings. But he said that the repair won't be something they are able to do. They are OK to do everything else, but not the regulator. So I'm a bit stuck, since with no MOT or tax I can't exactly take it elsewhere.

Try to find a second-hand regulator, or get yours reconditioned, I presume that your garage would be OK with removal and fitting.

I am going to Pleiades tomorrow. Shall I ask if he can recondition yours or offer a replacement. What exactly do I need to ask for? Is it H1 specific or from all XM's?

There's an XM being broken near me, but I cant seem to get a reply from the owner. Is the regulator the same in all models? Or does it differ between them?

Its a front pressure regulator I need. Its got a leak, but still seems to be working. Just need to fix the leak for the MOT. A replacement or a recondition would be fine, but whatever would be easier.

All pressure regulators are the same from about 1957 to 2000.

Have the garage check the botton mounting bolt isn't loose. If it is, the bottom round plug chatters up and down as the regulator operates and that makes it leak.

Your car was built in june 1992 and is definitely H1...which is good news from many aspects.
Plaiedes may do an exchange unit, otherwise get one off a xantia or any other hydraulic Citroen you can.
