The caveat is to check how many port there are out from the pressure regulator. If it's then same number, the unit should work.

Oh, and he warns that you should make sure your accumulator sphere is fully charged as that is likely to wear the o-ring on the pressure regulator out again if it is flat. (Likened it to fixing a puncture but leaving the nail in the tyre)

You can work out if the accumulator sphere is roughly right by analysing the tick time of the pressure regulator. I am not sure of what the time is on an XM but someone more knowledgeable than me will let you know I'm sure.

Hiya James, thanks for getting back to me. That's definitely an option.
I'm not clued up at all with the hydractive system though, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to work out if the sphere is flat or not. And by the sounds of things, my local MOT place wouldn't either.

I've sent off a few requests to breakers for a pressure regulator off a Xantia. Hopefully I can get one, get it through an MOT, then take up James' offer, and get my old one refurbed.

I think someone else here suggested wiping the regulator off and putting it in for a retest if the leak isn't that bad. That seems wise to me too. Then you can fix it at your leisure later.

Put the car on high and if you hear the regulator clicking on and off a lot, the accumulator is flat.

The accumulator must be flat then, there is an on and off clicking sound from the engine bay after the car rises. So that'll be something else to add to the list. i think I'll need to replace all the spheres sooner rather than later then.

The ticking is okay, it just depends upon how often it occurs!

No worries. I've ordered an exhaust system + CAT, so when I go up, I'll give the regulator and good clean, and drive it round the yard, see how bad the leak actually is.
