I didn't think they were interchangable either, otherwise everybody would be doing it. There is a man who knows - Paul?

I saw in a French forum where someone listed which pin did which message within each dot matrix. I'll have a poke around and list the details.

.
Very nice condition for such a high mileage (on it's way back from the moon), even the half leather seats look to be in pretty good nick......and the auto box is still working
XM looks nice in silver.

Well as far as I knew, and tried ASWELL, they ARE NOT...
However, if someone works out a fix for S1 units to fit S2's, then form an orderly que for your new one!
Ive bloody loads of them!

It will only be the pin outs. The message system works by each input line being shorted to Gnd to trigger a different message.
I've got some of the pin outs but the actual workings don't seem to follow the diagram in every way. I'll have a look and post up what I can work out.

Hi All
There is a lot of message compatibility but a few variations.
Wiring plugs are the same and many of the pin allocations are common.
In the Mk1 all messages are initiated by a single wire signal.
The bulb failure wires are Mk1 only and in the Mk2 this pair of the wires is used for serial messaging.
The radio display repeater uses these signals.
You can bodge the wiring to run a Mk1 display in a Mk2 by disconnecting the serial wires.
You only get car messages and not the serial messaging function.

Right,
Heres the reply I got:
Dear thefloyd_rocks_on,
Good morning. Some how I thought someone would ask that, 20 years designing automotive electronics helps. Both units work the same way, each message is triggered by a particular pin. The trouble is there's not a single pin in the same position one the two units. You need to make up an adapter to crossover all the connections between the car and the display. I'll have to have a look at this XM Forum, I didn't realise there was one.
Thanks for your interest,
Dave.
