Wanted Urgently - OSR Brake Caliper

Hi,

It's MOT time and it's failed on a leaking off-side rear brake caliper :(

Does anyone have a good spare one? It seems to be leaking from the split down the middle so maybe a new seal would suffice if anyone has one of those? The more local to me (Huddersfield) the better. All help gratefully accepted so I can get it back on the road.

The car is a 1997 2.0 16V auto saloon.

Thanks,

ANDY

Hi Andy

I think the rear calipers are just flush faced.
Might be worth trying a slight increase on the bolt tension.
Be careful as the bolts can snap if overtightened a bit roughly.

There is a seal between caliper faces...

if these are the same as xantia hatch ones which i think they are ive a couple kicking around..try the bolt routine tightening if that doesnt work give me a shout and we can get one to you...

I agree with you Paul, I was about to suggest the Xantia saloon uses the same
caliper as the Xm saloon. Confirmation of this is the Citroen Services Glasgow auction:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-XANTI ... 5d2cd9d2e7

and the application table shown. At the very least they both share the same pads
and the danger was a difference in the diameter/measurement of the two bolts!
There must surely be a Xantia in a local yard around your part of the world Wainy?

You should be able to lap the mating faces and replace the O-rings to rectify. New bolts may be required.

Fortunately Xms don't suffer as badly as Xantias on rear brake caliper to trailing arm corrosion.

OK..... thanks for the advice everyone. I must admit I wasn't aware that the calipers were the same as Xantia. Am now wondering about doing a temporary swap with the Activa's caliper to get it through MOT...... I can then repair or replace the leaking one a bit more "at leisure" seeing as the Activa's off the road anyway!

If anyone knows of any reason why this wouldn't work, let me know cos I'll be getting on with it tomorrow afternoon!

Thanks again (what would I do without this forum!),

I cannot see why there'd be a leak on the joint in the first place
if it's not been dismantled. The only thing I imagine to cause this
is corrosion in the caliper as the seat of the seal is inset on one
face and the mating opposite is firmly mounted against this.

Could it not be inconceivable that corrosion has actually eaten
through the bolt and it snapped or corrosion on the mating face
to the alloy arm has leaned the caliper and snapped the bolt?
Drastic but why else would it leak unless it has started to fail
due to corrosion eating in somehow?

Another verification of common suitability is the GSF listing here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rear-left-and ... 570wt_1195

The plan to borrow the Activa one will work but couldn't it
be easier to get one off a breaker Xantia tomorrow just in
case you snap a bolt on the Xant!? Been here going backwards
like this with jobs in the past robbing Peter to pay Paul without
fully addressing the whole job!
