Is it only me that thinks a car with such little use in seven years is likely to need a lot of recommissioning to be safe and reliable?

That also looks like a big dent to leave in a three grand car.

It wouldn't need all that much to see it right. Timing belt being the main thing I would worry about.

I have bought a few of these sub 25K mile cars, and they have been very good in terms of needing little recommissioning. I would say they need no more preventative maintenance than any used car, ie all the belts, coolant, oil and filters change.

The ding isn't pretty, I would use it as a bargaining point, either knock a few hundred off, or make him justify an eventual high sale price.

Other than being a base model car it's very nice.

Lots of XM seem to have that rear wing dented, but it's not insurmountable. If that was a 2.1 manual it would have been gone by now.

And talking of three grand cars, there's this rather nice one on Trovit at the moment. Second XM in a week, in fact! :o

/\ That one has been available for a while; see here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=3854

If it was closer and a bit cheaper, it would be on my drive by now.
