I saw that yesterday and thought it looked a very nice car and it made me think I should have bought the Series 2 Exclusive I was offered originally, however that needed a lot of work.
In addition I think the auto gearbox is probably the reason the engines were set to only deliver 110 Bhp, the slug will disintegrate if the torque is raised.

It definitely seems that sellers are cleaning XM up now and achieving good prices, as opposed to selling them dirty and getting scrap value as a couple of years ago.

Will, you're right about the box, I'm sure I read somewhere that a ZF18 is only good for about 300nm tops- even a 2.1 is pushing quite close to that limit with 250ish.

No wonder there was only a manual 2.5.

It's also the reason my Saab 9000 Aero manual has more power and torque (and indeed a completely different, bigger turbo as standard) than an auto one. Saab had to detune for the ZF18.....so you may well be on to something.

Yes, that car is very nice and I completely agree- the number of XM that have appeared in the last couple of months with 4 rather than 3 figure price tags is quite noticeable!

Which is great if you already own one.

Are you sorted yet?

Well if I already had one everyone would know about it! Let's just say something may be in the pipeline..... ;)

Hi all, the zf4hp18 was fitted to a massive range of vehicles including v6 A6 quattro's and Saabs, the 5 speed 5hp18 to the likes of 530i's and M3's so the basic design must be capable of handling large torque motors. The Q version is unlikely to differ substantially, and i suspect the reason for it not being fitted to the DK 2.5 is more to do with space and the re-engineering associated with this than the capability of the hp18.

In hindsight I think you are correct regarding the space issues with the 2.5, hadn't considered that.
I am still not convinced that the 4ZF18 can handle large torque figures.....Saab 9000 full pressure turbo- both manual and auto sporting 200 bhp. The manual peak torque on the manual is 323nm. Auto is only 294nm. The reason for this, surely, all other things being equal, is that they were worried for the longevity of the box?

Contrary to this though, I have read of a few tuned 9000 autos with more torque than this- regular fluid/filter changes and extra cooling seem to be the way forward. Curiously the owner of one highly-tuned example swore by driving the car using the gears directly (ie 1 2 3 positions) to avoid problems!

Sorry to have gone way off topic.

I think you are wrong about the 2.5 and engine bay space.
The XM chassis in the engine bay was heavily modified and widened to take the 2.5 engine and MG5 box.
There is physical space in that unique chassis to take either the 4HP18 or the 4HP20.
I checked it out a few years ago when I was intending to box swap between a 2.5 and a late V6 auto.
Was aiming to produce two working and unique XM's
Project died suddenly when my landlord curtailed my car storage space.
Had to send 3 good SORN XM's to scrap inside 5 days.
Thats when I ceased to keep anything except 2.5's.
