Following on from the post 'My Dad's XM. Hi' by Liz, posted under introductions/New members, I arranged to go and look at the car as it is quite close to us in North Norfolk. I met the owner a very nice elderly chap, Bob, who has owned the XM since 1995 and previously had a BX.

Basically the car has been off the road and garage stored for about five years after being replaced by a slightly newer Merc and due to health reasons Bob has now decided he needs to arrange disposal. It would be nice if someone were prepared to take her on, although there is quite a bit of tidying up needed, depending on how fussy you are since the car does start up and hopefully will also drive. Amazingly the car has apparently not been touched for five years but we did manage to get her going, although due to lack of use and LHM (I think) she would not rise off the bump stops.

I attach a selection of photos and here is a list of good and bad points:

Good
- Car is complete and original and starts and ticks over nicely.
- Paintwork is fairly good with no significant (if any) peeled lacquer or major dents.
- Autobox has been fairly recently rebuilt.
- Strut tops are good on top and also look okay underneath.
- At least one decent tyre fairly new Michelin Energy.
- Fitted with tow bar although I did not check condition.
- Front and rear bumper chrome strips are okay (I think).

Bad
- Car would not rise up that may be due to seized linkages or just low LHM level that I noted.
- Some damage to jacking points and hole in usual place behind the front nearside wheel arch.
- Door chrome strips mostly corroded.
- Driver side mirror just broken (I have tons of spares).
- No battery.
- Glovebox hydraulic strut has failed.

It was clear that Bob remains quite attached to the car and would ideally like to see it restored and saved, or otherwise if necessary used to keep others on the road. I said I would sound out interest and help arranged viewing and/or collection, so please let me know if you have any queries or would like to see the car, which is located just outside East Dereham in Norfolk. We also discussed offers around £200. Obviously the car would have to be trailered or lorried away as it has no MOT or tax etc.

With regards,

Matthew T.

In response to some queries from Eddie the car does appears too good to scrap. Although I could not get very far underneath there was some quite heavy surface rust on the rear sub-frame and spare wheel carried etc. and I think the bodywork mainly needs a good clean and polish. I had the feeling the owner would ideally like to see her gone in the next four-five weeks and I also recall that the car was serviced by a local main dealer. With regards, Matthew T.

Excellent Matthew. Well done seeing this one too. Seem to be getting out and about tracking them down!

It looks too good to break. £200 bargain. Mind you what is it really hiding?!
It certainly is very tempting, but I don't want another Auto, and I don't want another project at the mo.

I still like the auto, but I will admit not the best round town.
