Rheostat for dash lights - wanted

Ever since I have had the car the dash lights have been sulky, requiring tapping and twirlinig of the rheostat wheel to ensure compliance. They are now not playing at all. Does anyone have a "good" one surplus to requirements? Many thanks.

If your worried about that, pop the rheostat forward, remove the plug from the stat and short it out, OR connected the two spades together, this will give you FULL dash illumination, with NO dimming.

Thanks for that advice. I had thought about doing so but was a bit concerned whether it was safe to do so.

Quite safe, although don't leave it like that indefinitely - on "max" brightness it will shorten dash bulb life somewhat, and they're a pain to access and replace.

Went out earlier while it was still light and tried the bodge, but wasn't sure if it had worked as there was too much ambient light, but thought not. Just went out again now at 10-15, reattached the switch, put the ignition on and the lights and it was like Blackpool! The rheostat seems to be working ok but the dash lights stayed on when the lights were turned off but the ignition was still on.
I wonder what it will do tomorrow.

Don't know your RP number or year, but just checked ours (2.5) and the circuit diagram for it, and the complete instrument panel illumination only comes on with the (side)lights, and not the IGN. Feed is via fuse F10. I'm sure someone will quickly check out a 2.1 for you.
Possibly someone has had trouble and modified?
