For sale - Spares or repair. 1995 XM 2.1 TD SX Auto

Hi everyone,
it's with a heavy heart that I've decided to not continue with trying to get the XM back on the road as parts for the automatic 'box have to be imported or are on permanent back order and I don't have the time or space to work on it - especially as winter is approaching.
If you don't know already, the car lost 4th gear and lock up so it tends to freewheel in 3rd when you lift off the accelerator (revs drop to idle even at 60mph). According to sources, the fault points to a failure of the brake band actuating servo and associated parts. While trying to sort this problem the MOT expired so even though it can be driven albeit at no more than 60mph since 4th went AWOL, I haven't got the time or to be honest the inclination to pull the engine out again and try and find a working transmission. Can't justify a new rebuilt transmission so I'm selling the car as spares or repair. Please note it will have to be collected on a trailer since there's no MOT.

It's a XM 2.1 TD auto hatchback in SX spec and the colour is 'emerald green metallic'. Being SX trim, there's no aircon but it does have front electric windows and an electric sunroof.
Good bits
Engine in excellent order. No wear marks on bores, cylinder honing still looks fresh. Did go rather well before gearbox issues. Was in daily use for my 76 mile round trip commute from home to Stansted airport.
Both front electric windows work. Driver's side window had new cables and outer guides last year. Rear windows are manual.
Cloth interior nice condition with small section on front passenger seat watermarked due to sunroof dripping.
Heater controls all work.
No aircon to worry about
Had a new multilayer steel headgasket fitted few months ago. Engine never overheated and cylinder head is in great condition. Head was stripped and all valves cleaned and inspected. EGR now blanked off.
Tyres all good with fair bit of tread left on them.
Doors all lock and double lock using the key but the key fob doesn't work due to previous owner messing around with the electrics pertaining to the remote.
Suspension spheres all good.
Car raises to service high and service low quickly without any groans or weird noises. When it was in daily use, the car drove like it was on air.
Both front strut tops are solid. Can't see any rust on either.
Nearside hub/bearing and balljoint are brand new Citroen parts fitted few months ago.
New waterpump, timing belt, tensioner and guides last year.
New radiator (fitted back in summer)
Front subframe repaired and solid. (lower closing panel had rusted on offside due to waterlogged sponge backing on the undertray. New plate seam welded using thicker steel.
Still has undertray but not fitted.
Front structure very solid. No structural rust behind front removable rad/headlamp/bumper carrier. (unlike some XM's I've worked on)
39 to 42 miles per gallon in the real world. Got 42mpg on a driving holiday around Dorset. Autos were never as good on the juice as manual gearbox version.
Engine is in superb condition. When I removed the head to do the headgasket etc, the bores still had all honing, there was no wear lip and no scores or scratches. No knocking, rattles or rumbling either. Had the gearbox not failed I would have kept it.

Bad Bits
Auto transmission lost 4th gear. Packed its bags and went AWOL. Valve block unit was ok and all springs intact. The fault is within the gearbox.
ABS light comes on only when car is moving. It's done this since I got it over two years ago and it always passed MOT because ABS light does the normal self check flash and then goes out.
Numerous scratches, dings on bodywork from shopping trolleys and on roof where previous owner tried to fit roof bars. He cut the rubber roof rail trim to help fit them? No idea why.
Both rear jacking points distorted at the flange where either tyre fitters or previous owner used wrong lifting technique. This has split the Citroen underseal coating which has allowed rust to take hold. Wasn't an issue at previous MOT's but it would need looking at if someone was recommissioning the car for the road.
Rear spare wheel carrier rusty.
Sunroof leaks. Probably due to glass delaminating from the carrier or rust holes in corners of the carrier frame.
Rear subframe/suspension carrier to bodyshell mounts are starting to look rusty but not sure how serious. It was never an issue with the MOT tester so never bothered to dig deeper.
Regulator hisses occasionally much to the amusement of on lookers.
It's been standing for over a month now.

So - there you go. I'm selling this as a complete spares or repair car. I won't break it as I need my driveway back asap. It's scrap value is £180 so that's what I'm selling it at. If someone wants it to keep their own XM on the road then so be it. I did offer it to the guys at Practical Classics magazine and they were interested but were swamped under with other projects. I think the car would make a good XM if someone either converted it to a manual or had a good used auto ZF4 HP18. Because the problem is inside the gearbox, it would mean an engine-out job to investigate.
It's a lot of car for the money and it will make a good project or a good source of spare parts.
Please note, the car will have to be trailered away. There's NO MOT and as you no doubt aware, tax is non transferable anyway.
I'm based just outside Cambridge, Cambs.

If you're interested then contact me via forum private message, email or landline. If I don't answer please leave a message. I need it to go asap. I'm not breaking it since recent changes to vehicle scrapping means some breakers don't accept incomplete shells and won't issue a destruction certificate. So it's being sold cheap as a complete vehicle.

Sorry, can't buy your Citroen due to space constraints (unless you want to swap for a poorly Audi Coupe) but I loved the videos!

It's a red 2.6 v6 K reg. Nice condition but was prepared for the MOT and broke down on the way. I thnk its either the crank or cam sensor. I haven't had time to investigate properly.

Broken down Audi is something you should never mention :)
The mere fact this can happen, dents it's reputations badly. Vorsprung durch Techniek, remember....
At least this, seems like a simple fix for you ;)
