Cam belt and bits wanted... 2.5!

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Cam belt and bits wanted... 2.5!

Post by lankytim » Thu Jul 30, 2015 12:02 pm

Hi gang.

I'm after a cambelt kit for my 2.5, plus all the other bits I need to do the job.

Are there any out there?

Can the balance shaft belt be deleted?

The balance belt can be removed but leaves it a bit rougher running. Not good for veg in the cold :(

Has anyone done it before? I know on my 16v Volvo 940 it made no difference and removed a known weak point.

I have never thought to run a 2.5 without the balance shafts.
Do not think the very soft engine rotation control rubbers would last long.
On other XM's they are firm top and bottom engine mounts.
Balance belt has an easy life so I let them run to 150k.
GSF used to stock them for £30ish.
Not seen any NOS balance belts on ebay in the last 3 years.
Timing belts do still turn up as the DJ engines use them as well.
Rollers are on ebay as separate items.
Kits are DJ ones without the belt guide which no one seems to replace.

I may just remove the belt and see how I get on. I remember on Volvos removing it saved fuel too

It would be fairly easy to take the covers off, slice the belt and pull it out without touching the cam belt. If things didn't work out well I could replace it with the cam belt.

The DJ engine didn't use balance shafts, so hopefully my engine shouldn't snap it's crank or something similar.

The amount of energy absorbed by the belt and its rotating shafts will be negligible, and only massively sensitive laboratory equipment would be able to detect it. For everyday purposes, forget it. Also, if you induce additional vibration into the engine, where do you think the power to sustain and overcome this vibration comes from? - extra fuel.

You have, in the 2.5 XM engine, a power unit of considerable refinement, and it seems just plain stupid to deliberately disable a major feature of this. And for what purpose? To save a few bob?

If you don't like the 2.5's essential features, perhaps you should't have acquired one.

Sorry about that. It takes a bit to get me riled about XM abuse, but in this case, I think the car might deserve better.

Well, on my Volvo it resulted in a 2mpg improvement with no noticable increase in vibration. I also bought this XM a few years ago to prevent it being scrapped, I think the odd experiment isn't such a big deal tbh, it removes a few kg of rotating mass and eliminates a failure point which would destroy the engine.

However, I take your point regarding this brilliant engine... maybe I should just leave things as Citroen intended.

XM exclusive, could you point me in the right direction for the rollers?

Not that much on ebay at the moment.
UK - 371391669701 - £69.53
Germany - 371403913343 - £60.50

Cannot find any loose rollers in UK, post from france makes them too expensive as separate items.

Thanks! Looks like it's easier to grab an entire kit
