*1994 PRV 12V MANUAL with DIRAVI and No Sunroof. Location: near Glasgow.*
DRY STORED / NO MOT / FULLY WORKING / SCRAP £££
Yep, that's about how good it can look after a clean.
The moment has come for me unfortunately to have to write this message, to let this go. Reasons are the classic -no time, need space, and, as of this month, could do with some cash too.
The story between us begins in 2004 when I went to Germany to collect it -an ebay purchase, it was- and import it in the UK. She had about 180,000 kilometers. I enjoyed owning and driving this XM for 6 years and about 42,000 kilometers -she has about 222,000 kilometers now.
Typical comments upon bringing her in the UK, "have not seen one is such a good state" etc from the MOT man. I now realise that I've never had it welded -so it has not had any welding. Just focusing on this as my daily 2.1TD now needs a weld to pass its MOT. Anyway. I am the 3rd owner of this XM. Still have the German papers, and German plates, and all history as of my ownership. In the UK, it has been maintained with the help of Graham Harper, one of a couple of older Citroen specialists in Glasgow -he's sadly not with us anymore. Obviously, without this and the older XM forum, it wouldn't have been possible to maintain her.
So the story is that this was my daily till 2009, when I got a job that required a long commute. I then bought my current 2.1TD to do the main chunk of the milage, and kept both cars on the road. Till late 2010, when I parked up this XM and then sorned it. Reason was that the noise from the exhaust manifolds' broken studs had become somewhat annoying. Not for the driver, but for the pedestrian. It was attracting "attention", let's say -but for the wrong reasons...! We were about to tackle the studs with Graham -another manifold is spare too, should the one on the car prove cracked- but this coincided with him passing away and so I was left alone -the new owner not wanting to touch such a job. It's a shame though, as everything can be done with engine in situ. I have the Flickr photos and link from a Dutch amateur having done so on his V6 PRV. So, I started amassing the tools to try it myself, in my garage. The XM lived outside on blocked patio between November 2010 and March 2013, and then moved to my new house in the closed garage. Long story to short, I never found the time to do it, and perhaps I would after about 5 years from now, but I now also need the space: my daily 2.1TD went in for its MOT 3 weeks ago, and was found to need work totalling about £1,500. On top of silly wear and tear items (ball joints etc), it also needs: one bit welded; diesel pump overhauled; and its time for timing belt too. While the TD is being done, I bought a Xsara Picasso, which stays. The freshly MOT'd TD will go in the garage in hibernation, in place of the XM I'm advertising here. And it'll be put back to the road maybe next winter, or if the Picasso breaks down -that's why I'm bitting the bullet and having the work done.
So the my first ever XM needs a new home in the next 2-3-4 weeks maximum. Someone with proven credentials ideally, to repair the manifold(s) issue and the other stuff she needs, and put her back to her former glory. I'm thinking MTMXM, Dieselman, among others (if I'm not wrong, they have expressed interest in these V6s).
I have to emphasise that, from the 3 XMs I own, this is the one that is the most reliable -it starts every time, no matter what. It only left me twice: once due to an ignition module, and the other time an alternator. No funny, mysterious, intermittent type of issues with this one. During its "rest" as of 2010, I've been starting her up about once a year, just to move her a bit. Everytime I was astounded to see the car firing up as if I had parked it the day before. I find it strange, somehow.
Anyhow, the car had a few months MOT when I parked it up. Back then, it needed:
-a lower front engine mount
-an L-sensor; I have no other indication that this needs doing, other than the instant consumption dropping quite slowly upon lifting the foot from the throttle -too slowly; so a slow L-sensor I'd think.
-manifold(s) studs as mentioned
-ABS light was on. However, when I started it up this time again, with a new battery, it worked fine! Couldn't believe it. I repeated the starting process a few times to observe the light, and it checks out fine and goes off as should. Maybe the dry storage of the last years, maybe the brand new battery, who knows.
-rear elec windows I presume are stuck or need done, I just don't know.
-how it is for rust? I don't know. As I said, never been welded; if I look underneath, I can obviously see rust on the subframes; I tried with a screwdriver, and it looked solid, so presume surface stuff, but cannot warrant anything.
Engine, gearbox, drivetrain:
few drops of oil (always has done). Fully synthetic oil in my ownership. No other losses; no LHM, no coolant; coolant temp as should, fans worked as should when I parked it (can try them now if anyone wants me to); correct thermostat had been fitted, and temps checked etc. Tyres are too old now, but they hold pressure for at least a few days (drove it between old and new house on these). Brakes are not seized. Gearbox, clutch, both fine. New clutch in my ownership -quite soft (used to my TD, whenever I enter this car, I shove the clutch pedal to the floor). This engine has a chain, which needs changed everytime the Queen changes -or similar. I actually was preparing to have it done before Graham Harper passed away; poor man had spent considerable time locating the last tiny bit needed -looking at Renault etc spares (the Safrane had the PRV). Never done it. Don't have the bits -they went to the new owners; they might have the box in a corner. I can ask. To clarify, I was looking to do it, just to make it new -no other reason. The engine turns sweet as a nut, with no vibrations or noises whatsoever (other than the manifolds clackclackckack, you know how they do.). Had had new mid and rear exhaust the year before I took it off the road -still remember how they were costing like £500 back then; much cheaper now. Water pump had a leacking in 2009, and so it had a reconditioned pump on.
Suspension:
spheres seem ok; they are not hard i.e. as "bouncing" -not at all. It's strange because they are quite a few years' old. But I wouldn't change them -they're comfortable enough. No LHM leaks. Goes up and down as should. Hydractive II *was* working on this car (both electrically and hydraulically), and so should still be. This car has been well cared for in this area -see the relevant threads. Pressure regulator was adjusted to correct pressures, etc.
DIRAVI:
after starting up I was completely surprised to see the steering returning to centre just fine; this means good pressure in the system, and good DIRAVI bits too. The only issue with the DIRAVI is it doesn't stiffen the centering force as speed goes up, as it should. This is because when the clutch was done, the drive cable from gearbox to the DIRAVI centrifugal regulator, was removed but not resited properly -it's easy to think it's clicked in place but in fact it hasn't. 5 min job. Before the clutch, this feature worked perfectly -it's becoming so stiff as speed goes up, that it gives you the impression you're driving on rails.
Interior:
NO SUNROOF. All black leather -the "black of black" variety; good condition. Will need a valet. NO SUNROOF. Full climate; fan speed and temp regulation: working; aircon would need regassing; was trying the various positions (feet/face/demist) and I think the demist vent is locked open, while the others seemed to respond ok. both front elec windows working solid. Haven't tried the rear ones. More than 2-3 keys available for car. Original fobs available. Had installed aftermarket remote myself (RF), which I found not to be working now -could be the fobs batteries?-. Elec seats, horn, etc switches work fine. Rear wiper washer motor probably stuck -wiper works. Glovebox is off -I was investigating something, but don't remember what -honestly! Maybe the non-working afermarket remote locking unit (had installed receiver in the area)? Don't know. Trip computer all working fine. Petrol gauge bit crazy -shows tank full while it's not.
Exterior:
Black too; paint had gone flat already in my ownership; lustre comes up with a polish -have done part of the roof. But bonnet has a dent, and a front wing too. And assume various scratches on close inspection. Have *borrowed* the OS mirror glass for my TD. HID dipped beam. All lights working fine. 4 x "Star" or "Jellyfish" alloys.
It's crazy, but that's a car starting on the button that I could possibly try to put through an MOT tomorrow -if the ABS light behaved-, and still I can't, but have to rehome to make space for another XM to survive. Life obliges once again.

I'm not sure what to do with this. I think I'll start an ebay auction next week or so, but wanted to advertise it here first to get a feel of the interest, however I can't wait much, thus the auction. If anyone wants it, let me know. Anything above scrap cash is fine. Serious new owners will be preferred! Obviously I don't know everybody. The TD should be back from the repairers in 1 or 2 weeks' time, which means I'll need the garage space then. I think I can entertain the neighbours for 1-2 weeks after that, but no more. If someone's not taken it by then, I simply don't have other space to park it. I don't even want to think of what would happen to this specimen next. I am honest, I need it gone in the timeframe described, this is not the cliche "I need it gone". Message me, including if you have any other ideas. Basically it's ready to leave -have checked all fluids and inflated tyres and put 10lts of petrol in.
BTW the TD which is being saved is this one:
