Anyone got a good and not bust 2.5td Turbo unit sitting around?
Appears the seals have gone in mine so time for replacement (hopefully doable with engine in situ!)

End float movement John
If it moves enough for the Vanes to touch the housings then its toast
If it still spins freely(spin up by fingers and if it rotates for a good few seconds longer before stopping) it should be fine.
Always a worry with stored ones if they have had oil kept in the bearing gallery to stop the surfaces starting to stick or rust together in some cases ive seen in the past

You could buy a refurb kit for your own unit.

I could but then I'd have to balance it after taking onenof the turbines off
The chances are it wouldn't last too long when out of balance unless I got lucky and found somewhere that would sell a full cartridge/CHRA unit for it.

Hi kps
Not found a recovered one when looking today.
Not worth disturbing the heaps as I cannot see anything to dig for.
Hopefully I will get a spare engine out on the engine crane this weekend ready to split off the gearbox.
Should be able to unbolt the turbo as the first job.
You got a preference as to what I unbolt with the turbo.
Later version of the 2.5 engine from an "S" reg estate.

Some turbo specialaists, including (iirc) Turbo Technics didn't used to bother balancing them. They spin so fast couplsed with being small means that balance isn't an issue.
If you mark the turbine and shaft and refit with the marks lined up, it should be as balanced as it originally was...which may not be balanced at all.
It's already duff, so can't be made more duff than it is now.
