XM 1993 Mk 1.5 2.0i Turbo speedo cable info.
Hi, It's not been a good week with the XM! Earlier in the week we went out for a drive in the country and had the speedo go down. So I've now got no speedo in adition to having the front damaged in a "quiet" area of a local supermarket.
As it is a Mk 1.5 it's got to be cable driven but I probably won't get round to investigating it until the new year. I downloaded a speedo ap for my phone which I now perch on the binnacle.
I've read about Speedy Cables Swansea so any experiences of this company would be appreciated or any other company doing similar.
Best regards,
Chris

Which half has gone is the first question. Ive got a couple of working upper ends but there is also a difference in the engine bay where it attaches to the lower part. Some had the speed sensor of all later psa type down directly on the diff where others had the sensor at the join just under the lhm tank area..
Projects:(eventually if theres any bodywork left)

Speedy cables did a fine job for me. I sent them the old cable with the bits and a new cable came back within a week. Fitting it now ....

Re: XM 1993 Mk 1.5 2.0i Turbo speedo cable info.
Hi all,
I've just restarted the work on the car after the break for Christmas, New Year and a certain Self Assessment for the taxman!
I've has a total struggle with the speedo cable as I seem to have a rare set up.
My cable does not have the bulkhead socket grommet and the ball on the cable, It is all in one, a large grommet mounted on the cable where the ball should be.
After having read that the cable should be able to be pulled into the car I gave it a good tug and the large grommet popped through to just behind the hole where it jammed. At the same time the drive end came off the sheath leaving it jammed in the grommet.
After removing the glove box there was still no access to the jammed grommet. I had to cut the large ducting connecting the L/H vents which is just a loose push fit onto the heater. This gave me better access to the jammed grommet which I was the able to remove.
I have examined the grommet and it is a one piece moulding. I probed the inside of it and there is a void. This has not been previously disturbed in any way and is not simply a case of the ball being stuck inside the grommet or any kind of previously bodged repair.
I have posted it to Speedy Cables and I'm hoping for a positive answer in the next couple of days. I had previously sent Darren at Speedy some pics and once he realised that he had the correct connector for the back of the speedo he told me to post it to them , so fingers crossed that he will be able to make one up.
I'll let you know if he can help me and what problems I get refitting it.
Best regards,
Chris

I'd be interested to see a picture of that grommet arrangement, as there should be a ball on the cable.
iirc, You should pull the cable into the engine bay for removal, pulling a cord tied to it, with it. To refit the new cable tie the speedo end to the cord and gently pull it through, after lubricating it.

Yes I tried pulling first into the engine bay first and the outer cable started to stretch without any movement at the grommet, this only became clear when I pulled it into the cab and eventually retrieved it.
I'll post some pics when I get the cable back.

Speedy "lost" the cable for a week so they aren't producing it until next week.
