I'm afraid Jaap, when it comes to roads in this country....don't expect much!

You went the wrong way Jaap... The best way to Holyhead (or rather Llandudno - which has a fantastic Premier Inn) is to get on the A5 at Shrewsbury and then keep on it all the way to LLandudno through such places as Llangollen. It might take a good few hours more than the motorways and the A55 but it's worth every mile of it...

In a manual Xm it takes much less time than you think.
Here speaks the voice of experience.

I've only (so far) done the route in an automatic Xantia Campbell but hopefully one day this year I'll do it in the XM..messerschmitt owner wrote:Jim

It takes me a long time as I keep stopping to enjoy the scenery

I did take the wrong way for sure, won't travel that way again! It's just I've been travelling through the fine roads of Wilthshire and Wales a good few times now in the recent past.
But the whole trip is to an end now, home where the sun shines and I just spent 2 hours with an old John Deere lawn mower
.
I hope I have encouraged some people, just to take that XM and go some nice places.
It was an adventurous trip for more than one reason but not really (for me that is) as far as the car was concerned.
It did 5600 kilometres and got a new starter motor as a bonus and the need for a new window cable.
Would I have taken the petrol XM, it would have cost me more on petrol than the new starter motor and cable is worth, so all is forgiven
Agreed, she's drives somewhat like a battle ship but in great comfort and I think rather quietly for such an old diesel. 80-85 MPH is the best cruising speed in my opinion.
The best economy, I got from the last tank, bought on the German border. Some sort of premium diesel, it got us 814 miles all the way to my 'own' petrol station, close to home. Averaging 48.58 MPG travelling through the Netherlands and the UK on very congested roads. On the whole the car averaged 45,1 MPG
As for oil consumption: I can't measure how much she burned

Welcome home Jaap
That was some excellent economy you had there...
I've never known an XUD (or XU) engine ever to burn oil. I guess some might but not in my experience...
All in all, I reckon your XM did you proud...

Re: These, are the voyages of the starship Turby D.
Turby Durvy did something strange tonight: it started straight away as usual but stalled instantly, when I put the gear handle from P to R. This happened 3 times in a row, 4th time the engine kept running normally.
Now the fuel tank was rather empty but....After driving home, I tried to shift the gear in all positions with the engine running and all was normal. I wonder if something is wearing out...buy what I can only guess. Anyone had this phenomena before???

I missed your holiday write up Jaap. glad all went well anyway and both you and Liz got back safely. As Jim has already mentioned, great economy there. Nearly 1000 miles out of a tank. That is impressive.
I really want to take mine to France on a good road trip. Just need the courage!!!....if only it was a couple of years old!
Mind you...best place to take an old French car, is its native country.
They do drive quite differently the diesels to a V6 say. Mine feels sort of turbine like....only way to describe it i think...maybe it's the sounds! I like it, and it goes whisper quiet at speed which is nice. Nothing draining when you have to listen to a busy engine. Mine is quite happy at 80.
Curious gearbox problem. Not the cable?...doubt it. How's your fluid levels?
Mine is still doing this burrrrrrrrr sound when changing into 4th. However it doesn't always do it. Oddly it is better with someone else in the car.
Hope it is one of these self cures the XM is known for!

That is an odd problem Jaap.. If it was a petrol I'd say it was electrical and related to the start inhibit switch but it doesn’t make sense on a diesel unless the stop solenoid was being operated when moving the gear selector but I can't immediately see how...
One to watch..
