That thing must do a million miles to the gallon! I had a 3 cylinder petrol the other day and i averaged 68mpg over the day.

Pretty good bullet proof cars.

Head is off. :D

The block.

Where it's gone. The other cylinders looked fine.

Headgasket. It hasn't broken through the rings around each cylinder, but it's clearly rusting away. The coolant in this engine has always been crystal clear...with a blue tinge of course. I always used a 50/50 mix. The car had done 172k when it went. So it was time I expect. It just rotted as they do.

The fuel gauge just doesn't move, and I drive the thing hard.
Good to know. It's 10 years old, with 22,500 miles on it. It's basically brand new. Full Mitsubishi service history.
So the point of it is it's the town hack. Plus is so versatile. It's a four door, and the rear seats do all sorts of clever things. Good for taking old engine oil to the dump!

Hi Russ

That gasket looks as if the fourth pot hole is no longer circular (maybe just the photo?) - almost as if the metal edge has been pushed over.

There doesn't appear to be any obvious leakage, but diesels can be misleading like that, as the compression is what leaks away, into the waterways.

What is the yellow gunk in No4 cyclinder?

Try turning the engine now the head is off, if it won't budge pour in a shot of diesel then using a piece of hardwood as a drift, hammer the pistons down.

I'm not convinced that that No.4 gasket ring is circular.....it appears to have an irregular shape.
Check with a vernier caliper.
Looks as if the outer rings have been pushed outwards towards the end waterways; noticeable carbon there too on the RH one.
Could be wrong.

Looks distorted on the image.

I agree about the diesel and the application of a fine adjusting tool!

PS Give us a photo of the Mitsubishi :) (Then I'll admit to what I've just bought  )

That's what I thought. I was expecting a nice split or crack between the bores. But they all seem fine. Although in one place the gasket has got very close. When it failed it was pushing exhaust gases into the coolant and expelling it. But the car ran fine and didn't eject if the expansion cap was left off. Clearly that's not right and suggests failure.

The white stuff to me looks like congealed coolant. Maybe oil and coolant. Not sure really. It was on the bottom of the head too, but was wiped off very easily. It's soft, not crispy!
I will try moving it again then. I'll give it a thwack!...Otherwise I was going to do as you say and put some diesel in it and leave it for now.

You could be right Chris. I'm no expert. There were some interesting black marks at the edges that look like gases escaping sideways. I'll see if I can measure it a bit better.
