Re: rescuing an XM
I have had a fair few automatic Xms in 4 Cylinder petrol and diesel form. So all the same 4HP18 box, varying mileages from 23K to 201K. Only the Lucas Epic 2.1 TDs have all had what I would consider a poor unsmooth gear change. All of the rest of the 2.1 TD Bosch cars and the petrols have been fine.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Re: rescuing an XM
My mates 2.1 TD Exclusive auto on 220k is still brilliantly smooth in her [the car's] gear changes! We do a change every 6k or less though! Original box from what we can tell.
The TCT was brilliantly smooth on petrol no so much on LPG but that was a fueling problem, not a box problem.. also my 12v V6 SEi had a brill change.
Ive not driven a Lucas Epic auto to comment on them..

I'm not sure what age of car it is - I have experience of Lucas and Bish Bash ... pumped cars and preferred the Bish Bash vehicle - it was quicker, and faster and more fuel efficient than the later model.

Re: rescuing an XM
OK - I've been to see a beautiful dark blue XM VSX Auto estate - R plate, first reg Sep 1997, but built in June 1996. Sorned since 2008, with 101,009 miles on the clock. One warning light on (the fuel injection one) but starts no problem with a jump start. All the electrics work, but the left hand display is as usual on an XM and has missing lines along it.
Its a 2.0 petrol - is it a turbo - has enough piping for one?!
Has full leather, which is still lovely and supple, with a split rear seat, both headlamp washer covers are there and there are no marks or dents on the body. No visible major rust underneath, strut tops look spot on (like my 2.1TDs when I got it).
Bad points
Needs a good wash and I think it'll shine ...
It's a petrol auto.
warning light on
needs an LHM top up as when I put it on high, the warning lights came on
needs two rear spheres - they're hard!!
needs a battery
Good points
Leather, with split rear
service history
sensible miles
Vredstein tyres all round in good nick
seems to be smooth to drive - took it up and down the drive only.
sunroof works
all leccie windows work
has trip computer
headlamp washer covers are there
front spheres seem fine and the accumulator clicks only intermittently
what do we think a tidy 2.0 petrol with a good service history at 101,000 miles is worth in as found condition. Garaged since January 2008.

Its worth £250 all day long.
No more since it has no MOT and been lain up so long.
You could always fit a nice 2.1 TD engine to it, and have a proper car!

Re: rescuing an XM - now with pics
it is a turbo, isn't it!
Am speaking to the son tomorrow about it - my experience tells me £250, budget £250 for an MoT and give it a service and it'll be on the road.
Would rather it had been a diesel, but if I buy it, it'll be a keeper - and the BX auto will go instead.
