Glad the car was fixed up Rob. Thank goodness for Tony Weston. I now know who to pay a visit too if needs be. I also just this morning, printed out a list of specialists around the country with contact details, incase something like this might happen elsewhere in the country to me....Might be useful!

The one thing I fear the most about driving on the motorway is having a nasty accident...i hate seeing accidents too and why people now think it is acceptable to film them on phones is quite distasteful.
This is where the french are good....they just divert you off away from any accidents. so no rubber necking. the one accident i vividly still remember from years and years ago was a load of French cars having crashed off a very tall motorway bridge into a field. It really is a stark reminder that we are effectively sitting in tin cans doing 70-80.

On that note, glad your return journey was a safe and mechanically, successful one!

Had a nice drive out this morning, up the A1M to Newcastle and then back down the A19. No pictures I am afraid but I did see a few interesting cars on the way: immaculate Healey 3000 (looked like a late model), H120 Sunbeam Rapier in a vivid green, a Moggie and a Nissan Leaf (didn't think anyone could afford tham!).

Currently considering the purchase of a R5 Campus Prima but the seller doesn't seem to want to answer the phone or respond to e mails.

I haven't had time to investigate properly, but I seem to have lost both dipped beam headlights; likely to be coincidence or something that affects both - relay?

Possible relay, or both bulbs failing at the same time. The relay is behind the drivers side headlamp.

Thanks Robert. Looks like I shall have to remove a very rusty after market alarm that has been there for a very long time that I have avoided touching since I bought the car!

The incredible self healing XM strikes again!

Moved the car on to the drive this morning to begin investigations only to find the lights are all now working. Suspect the switch may be at fault as some months ago it had an attack of indicators flahing constantly.

Hi Rob,

Interesting reading of recent happenings :)

The self repairing lighting scenario I have experienced also, turned out to be earthing issues rather than anything else....quite well known on these cars :P

I'm loving your interest in old Renaults.....I too love the smaller family cars like the 16 and the 5 ;) There are often some great examples that turn up on ebay....wish I had the extra money and a garage to keep one....id love to add an old Renault to sit next to the xm :)

You'd be interested to know that a garage customer of mine in Oldham has an original good condition Renault 16 under a cover sat in his garage....I haven't had the time to get out and give the car a full inspection yet, but I will get there in the next couple of weeks or so.....it used to belong to an old lady neighbour of his who passed it onto him and he has stored it ever since in his garage.....ill post up some further details and hopefully some pictures when I get to see it in all its glory :)

My first solo drive on the day I passed my test in July 1972 was in my Dad's Renault 16 and that is an event that will never be forgotten, cementing the R16 in my affections for ever. Apart from my very first car, which was a 1957 Moggie, nearly all the cars I owned over the next twelve years or so were Renaults; I think I had 3 X R4, 2 X R5, 2 X R16 and at least one each of a 10 and a 12.

I think that just about the only thing that could tempt me to part with my XM (other than another XM :-) ) would be a 16, but serviceable ones have become very rare and good ones very expensive. It is a similar tale with the 4 now and so I am looking out for a rust free 5 before they too become scarce.
