Polo went for MOT today and came back with a substantial fail list. Including a broken coil spring. Replacing these seems to be the main source of income for the garage I took it to, they had several in to do today including a Cadillac that needed two. On our Multipla, they are pretty much a service part it has had so many over the years - nearly as many as it has had drop links. My daughter's Yaris needed two for its last test as well. Strangely enough the XM has never needed one... :D

On a related note, I am considering replacing the spheres on the XM as I am so enjoying the floaty suspension on the BX. Having had a very quick look, AEP seem to be the most competitive on price. What are folks' views on "Comfort Spheres"? Particularly with regartd to the V6? I love having the power available but despite what the regular need for coil springs might suggest, I am not an aggressive driver, much more of a wafter in style and elegance...
Regards

Rob

Don't go for comfort spheres, they are too floaty.

Ragger,
If an MoT garage is also producing strings of cars for it to fix, then you should look elsewhere for your tests....or at least a second opinion. And Toyota springs are not known for breaking, btw.
On the XM, just keep the spheres decently gassed - particularly the centre ones, which provide all the soft-ride comfort.

Agreed. I have used the same MOT station for the past 20 years or more for two main reasons; they do a good solid job and they do nothing but MOT's, which means they don't go poking and prying for unnecessary work.

Well the Polo is now all sorted with a new ticket. The fails when retested were pretty much in line with what happened the first time around but the advisories were reduced to two! Work all done and back on the road for another year.

I have decided now that I would like to spend some more love (and cash, obviously) on the XM, and as I am finding keeping four old cars on the road a tad expensive I shall be advertising the BX soon. I haven't done so as yet, but thought I would offer it here first:

1990 BX 1.4 RE (badged TGE) for sale. MOT 21.03.16. Just under 48 thousand miles as of today. This has been a well cared for car. It starts easily and quickly rises to height. The suspension is soft and there are no leaks. The car is located in the north east.
If you are genuinely interested in buying this “basic” model BX then contact me privately for more details and price.

It actually is a really good example of the least loved (apart from the unturbo 1.7 of course) version of the BX, and as such it is possibly quite rare - some people care about that. I bought it because I wanted to scratch a BX itch, which I have now done. I hate selling cars - buying them is much more fun, but give me a call if you are keen.

Hi Rob,

The BX looks absolutely gorgeous, and I hope she finds an appreciative home soon.
Now, if she were a 19RD, that would really give me a yearning for another!
BX almost invisible here now. We see maybe two a year at most.
All the comfort - and simplicity - that some XM owners sometimes hanker after (sometimes...'till things get fixed...).
Good luck.

Why say it is an RE when it is actually a TGE, which means it isn't the base model.

It looks like a good example.

The V5 says RE, the back of the car says TGE. It was the same with the last one I owned as well.

The V5 is wrong, that car is a TGE with the 1.4 TU engine.
