According to Service Citroen the indicator stalk is black until RP5655 and then it's Hurricane Grey . . .

. . . but the wiper stalk is black until RP4982 and then grey :o

That don't leave a lot to go at. :(

Er, don't know. My car doesn't have such modern things as a trip computer, and the button on the end of the stalk is solid. I wouldn't know if the button on the replacement stalk moves - it never occurred to me.

HI Eddie,

Tip, about using test-meters:
Good at checking the presence of a voltage on a wire or pin, but NOT at telling you whether the connection is capable of delivering enough current (power) to make a device work.
Why? Because
- the meter draws very little current, in order to display the voltage (probably a just few milliamps)
- if the circuit contains a bit of resistance (eg dirty switch contacts, or damaged wiring), the few milliamps will probably pass through this resistance without too much of a problem, but
- a large current (enough to make a headlamp, or washer motor, etc) will not pass through the resistance, and the device (lamp, motor) will not operate.

How to test whether a circuit/wiring/switch will deliver decent current?
- Instead of connecting a test-meter, connect a 12v test lamp instead, between test point and a known good earth. This will draw meaningful current. If there is resistance in the circuit, the lamp will either not light, or be dim.
- What wattage of lamp to use? Ideally the lamp should draw roughly the same sort of current that the device you're testing would, if working properly: few examples...
Use a known good 5W sidelight bulb to test a sidelight circuit or interior light
Use a 21W indicator lamp for checking out motor and relay circuits
Use a good 55W headlamp bulb for checking out headlight and glowplug circuits
The worst you could do is blow a fuse by using too high a wattage lamp. If in doubt, use a 21W lamp - that'll do for most circuits, except delicate electronic ones.

So, to summarise:
- You can have voltage available at a point, but not necessarily anything much in the way of usable current.
- What stops the current "getting through" is resistance - like dirty contacts, or failing switches.
High current circuits are more prone to failure, as they put electrical strain on wiring, contacts, fuses and fuseholders, by generating heat, and contact arcing.

Hope helpful. Sorry for the physics lesson.

PS. Your 3.44v delivery voltage to that pump sounds very odd. Would have thought it should be more like battery voltage (12v). Possible that the measurement was taken between that connection and a less-than-good earth point? Try the test lamp.
Don't forget to check out the earth/ground connection of a device - most motors and lamps will have one of their terminals grounded. If necessary, run a temporary ground connection in, from a known good earth point.

I'd to read it a couple of times to digest it, if not completely understand it.

I didn't know if the 3.44 figure was right or wrong, just that if both connectors had the same figure and that figure was enough to make the rear work, it was surely enough to make the front work.

After checking my stock I have three different types of wiper stalks, of which one does not include the trip computer button as fitted to diesel and lower spec petrol models and highlighted by Mike. The other two types have the different connector pins noted by Neil with a subtle change of colour and the trip button material must also have changed as on one type the surface is bleached almost white. I have found three versions of this switch. Most have part no. white label.
Simple switch with fixed wipe speeds and wash - marked 336905 & 9563798177 - 4 pins one side, 2 the other. - No variable wipe, no end button. (BNIB).
Switch with fixed wipe speeds, wash and variable wipe - number label missing - 5 pins one side, 1 the other - No end button. (used and damaged beyond repair).
Switch with fixed wipe speeds, wash, variable wipe and display control button - marked 34076003 &96225893ZL - 6 pins one side, 2 the other. (used but plenty spare).

Your wiper stalk should definitely be black Neil and seemingly without a trip button and I do have a couple of spares you would be welcome to collect at the X! Regards, Matthew T.

It would seem that Citroen altered the wiring of this switch during the XM mk1 production.
Old and new type switches use the same connector but connectors and switch are wired differently.
With the change to the new switch the wiring loom was modified to work with both types of switch.
After a period the loom was simplified to work only with the later type switches.
The change should only affect the pull to wash function.
Newer switches will not work properly in early cars.
Source - Workshop manual wiring diagrams.
It should be fairly easy to add an extra contact in the plug of early cars so they work with later switches.

Early Switches send the 12v out to the wash motor on pin A2 - Pins A4, B1, B3(12v in), B5 & B6 are also used.
Later Switches send the 12v out to the wash motor on pin B2 - Pins A4, B1, B3, B5 & B6 are used for the same functions as on early switch.
Temporary loom mod was to link A2 and B2 in the plug.
Push button where fitted is wired A6 to B4.

I can recover and send you a contact with a short length of wire if you want to add the B2 to A2 link into your wiring.

That would be brilliant Matthew. I'd certainly take one of them off you.
