Salt is the necessary evil, salt causes rot, if no salt is used, then cars end up smashed.

I broke a Xantia Activa that came from the Rep of Ireland and it had zero rust on it. They don't salt the roads as often as we do, and only major routes.

Salt is not the only option just the cheapest first cost option.
Salt damage to steel and reinforced concrete road underbridges is a major issue.
As it does not get paid for from the same budget no one worries that the bridges need major repairs or replacing early.

Not if we all used proper snow tyres, they make a significant difference to grip.

Give it another fortnight and it will be back spot on subject.
There is of course a proper place for discussions about site moderation policy.

Absolutely,

I have been running winter tyres on my Xm for the past 2 winters, and had no problems last winter with the very cold snap and snow we had.

Well worth the initial investment.

I'll try and put it back on topic again...

Its a pity that I'm not bringing my car with winter tyres on it to the CXM rally next weekend...

Sorry chaps I wasn't intending to sound so sanctimonious! It's not my thread after all :)

But having said that, the tyre debate's interesting isn't it: worthy of its own thread....

Hi All

This has brought out one real difference between this site and the original one.
All website threads wander a bit ours perhaps more so than most sites.
It does really upset some of our members and even some moderators.
Our big difference is that up till now we all tolerate it and despite having a very large number of moderators none have decided to tidy and move things about. No one has said they cannot, it is just the way things have turned out.
On the old site Noz has always warned those who stray then cut and edited if not heeded.
This can make a lot of on going work in site maintenance particularly on a site run by one man.
I think that in practice the wandering threads add far more value overall than expecting people to always generate a new thread.
Also most of us will have a germ of an idea for quite a few threads but will seldom turn that into even one new item.
We will leave the new threads to be prompted by a car problem.

A well ordered site plus a search function is supposed to solve that but we are still a very small sized site and people still fail to search successfully.
Just look at the number of posts where XMX in particular puts in a lot of work to help people find things.
On a large site like FCF searching is a real pain.
Self help sections are intended to to cut through this problem at least as far as car faults are concerned.
In reality I do not think I have seen a single site that has the solution to this problem.
As moderators we are discussing the future now Noz is live again.
I would like us to keep our site format identity and differences but perhaps move under a new non clashing name just leaving this site name as a sign post pointing to our site and also to Noz's .

John
