Increadable work alasdair well done ...

I'm still slightly embarrassed that I convinced you to take her on saying it will only need rocker fingers but has been a huge job..

Hats off to you what a wonder feeling to hear that smooth running.

The lucas epic is the loudest of engine tunes. Early lucas mechical I think we're the quietest of setups..

A great result there, Alasdair, much deserved.
Brilliant work.

Don't forget to bleed the cooling system thoroughly (with header bottle) when the final coolant goes in. XUDs don't like air pockets.

The 2.1 doesn't suffer air locks as bad as the 1.9 as the thermostat is on return rather the feed.. Once there's coolant circulating through the heater matric which is the main air lock area its fairly self sorting then.. Bleed for the matrix I think is the one on the water pipe just behind the upper cam belt cover..

Make up a "header bottle" to fit into the coolant expansion tank, something like this.
I used a short length of top hose to be a push fit into the tank neck, which also blocks off the overflow hole.
Bottle was 1L, bottom cut off.
.
header bottle, corrected.jpg
Drain and refill with coolant.
Keep the header bottle at least half full.
Open the system's bleed screws in turn to let out any immediate air.
Start up, and allow engine to reach full working temp, signalled by the cooling fans cutting in at least twice.
During warm up, use the bleed screws several times again.
Keep the bottle at least half full.
Some firm squeezes on the rad top hose will help expel more air, which will glug up into the bottle.
Raising engine revs to around 2000 for around 15 secs a few times will also help.
When no more bubbles appear, and no more air comes out of the bleed screws, job is done.

These diesels use so little fuel, it takes a while (30 mins+ on the 2.5) to achieve full temp.

When all done, leave the bottle in place, and let everything cool, probably overnight.
Syphon off any excess, remove temp bottle, and set coolant level to where it should be.

This is the recommended Citroen method for system bleeding, and it does work in forcing air out of the system.

Hope helpful.

Well, after topping up the coolant I was letting it run up to temperature and..........it all has rather has gone very wrong.

Heard a "clack", it started misfiring, lower pulley has stripped the key and the timing belt looks like it is trying to "run off" the crank toothed gear.
I took the pulley off, started the car....misfire and the belt was about to run off the toothed crank cog.....turned it off before that happened.

I will most likely weigh it in....I really think I am done with this car now.

(I used a gaiter cone.....but I do not think that matter now :( )

So sorry to hear this after all your hard work. I feel genuinely gutted for you and really hope it turns out to be something simple.

I understand if you've reached the limit though, it would test anyone's resolve after everything you've done.

Maybe sleep on it and see what others say in the way of more constructive comments.

Best wishes,
Jon
