Technically - or physically yes it will BUT - theres a fair bit of cost of dooing it, or a lot of wiring involved depending which way you go.

HDi 110 8v engine IS the one to have BUT.. On the Series 1 theres cable clutch and push clutch, but the HDi 110 uses a pull clutch and Hydraulic Operation. So first hurdle is to plumb in a Hydraulic system from a Series two car..

Only 2.5 Series two cars used Hydraulic clutchs in the UK. Then theres a fair bit of car modifying to do to the chassic off side leg and the 2.5 subframe is unique...

Then for the HDi engine to work, you can either spend about £100 quid to have the ECU Unlocked from a specialist.. OR rescure the whole wiring harness from the inside of the car to the engine bay to have communication from the car body computer to ECU so when the key is put in the ignition it will unlock the ECU.. The wiring in the Xantia has a VERY GOOD connecting block in the right side of the firewall which wouldn't fit in the XM very easilly. Heres where the the Re-Wiring would be needed.

The gearbox on the 2.1 might well do for the HDi, but I think 5th gear/final drive ratio for the HDi will be too short. The HDi 90 uses the older BE3 box and cable adjustment, but it may well be pushing the power capabilities of the BE3 to the max and give it a shorter life.

This is just off the top of my head, theres quite a bit of difference between Xantia and XM in structal side of things... and theres a HUGE amount of work to swap it the HDI into the XM. So dont expect it to be a straight drop in and go swap. IT WONT be.

Im happy to learn different however!!
