For most XM's a 4 digit number that decodes to give build date.
Painted numbers (about 25mm high) between the hinges on the door pillar.
Drivers side on LHD and passenger side on RHD.

The RP number stands for Replacement Parts number, but gives the day the car left the assembly line.

Yours is 21 October 1996.
