A MK1 rear wing/spoiler request!

Hi all,

I'm looking at installing a Mk1 wing on my Mk2 as i personally think the Mk1 wing looks a lot better than the very small mk2 one, however i have no idea as to the locations of the holes and as i'm sh*tting the concept of drilling holes in my belived XM enough, i don't want to be drilling more than necessary! So my request is, if someone who has a MK1 with the rear wing, could you possibly upload pictures with a ruler/tape next to the wing so that i have an idea of where to position it, this would be greatly appreciated!

A template would be best.

Be aware that the Series 1 tailgate has internal strengthening plates to accept the spoiler mountings and stop deformation, especially when the spoiler is used as a handle.
You would be well advised to replicate these plates and bond them to the inside of the skin.

I did not know this! I shall attempt to replicate some strengthening plates, probably use a bit of angle or flat between the bolts

Remove the inside trim and look from underneath.
You may well find stiffeners present complete with guide holes to position outer skin drilling.

Aren't the mounting holes in different places. Meaning you will have spare holes... May be best to swap for an S1 boot lid

That's a very good point, i'd rather not weld up the holes because of obvious heat issues. I may try to make them disappear with JB weld sitck and support from the inside of the boot, i can't think of any other solutions.
Finding a replacement MK1 boot lid near me is going to be quite tricky i think unfortunately.

I'm looking into ditch the spoiler from my Mk 1 altogether - the reason being, the spoiler suffered extensive paint fade/clear coat blistering, I can't justify colour match painting this.
So I took the trim off and had a look today, getting the nuts off seems straightforward enough as there are access holes thru double skin. By the way I noticed you can't get the rear screen wiper off - is it the case?
Anyway, it looks like though - bad news for you XmXD (and me, to a lesser extent) - there are depressions on the bootlid where the spoiler posts sit against. Which means you'll either smash the bootlid to create the depressions to match the mating parts of the spoiler or re-profile the base of the spoiler posts so that they are flat against the bootlid skin.

I think i get what you're saying, i don't suppose you could post a picture? I'd that is the case I'd probably try using a thicker gasket material to take up the unevenness between the boot lid and the spoiler

Ok, I took it off, it's a good news for you, and ok news for me.
There is no depression, it was just the spoiler getting pulled back on aft fasteners and created minor dimples. So you just need to drill holes and stick it in there. I didn't see any doubler plates underneath but was a bit of a rush so can't be sure - will check and take photos later in the week.
Aft fastener hole is directly accessible, forward one has a double skin over but about an inch diameter access hole is there. I imagine cars without spoilers would have them also.

As for me, I need to flatten the dimples and bog it up.

I'll upload photos when I get some for inside photos for internal doublers (if any).

Ps. I noticed that the hatch needs more effort to shut it close (without the weight of the spoiler - which isn't much but due to the moment arm, there is a noticeable increase in effort. I wonder if a ballast was installed to compensate for it - seems like a silly idea, I know) . Conversely, if your struts are currently weak, it's something to think about.
