replace the engine on a 95 2l turbo
A mate has one of these but the garage advises that due to head gasket problems and fuel line hassles the engine is dead.
How easy is a swap?
How available is that engine? Was it fitted to anything other than the Peugot 605?
How feasible is a diesel replacement?
I think his motor is too good to scrap, but the expense/faffage quotient is high.
Any advice, folks?
Thanks

You can pick a complete XM 2.0ct up for next to nothing, and engines are cheap, but buying a complete car may be simpler.
The HG on one of these is pretty easy.

Re: replace the engine on a 95 2l turbo
Disagree about the engines being cheap - If so, wish I could find them if they are as I need x2.
The barryboys specifically kill Xm's and Xantia Activae for these TCT engines, throwing good cars
away just to kill themselves faster in a deathtrap 106/206. The constant torque engine with
modest boost is an odd idea and not really suited to boy racerism but they can be tweaked
to more strssed, more thirsty and unsuitable levels. It must be mentioned the Activa version of
the Turbo engine is very heavy on fuel likely due to the gearing but the 8v 2.0i normally
aspirated manual is better on fuel than the Xm turbo fitment - incidentally, I have half a
dozen of these that need to find new homes...
AND PLEASE NO - DON'T SCRAP AN ACTIVA TO FIX AN XM!?!!!!
Very true though that head gaskets are NOT difficult to change on these engines and they are
known to 'go' quite easily and need renewal every 150k miles posssibly or once in teh ownership
lifetime with an XM - certainly according to Andy Burnett of CCC fame. The costs are modest
with bolts about a tenner, HG possibly 70 quid (judging from an ebay auction at least).
Fix the car by faffage for sure but it'll be worth it and likely the car is costing you naff all to
start with?!!

Tut Tut!..

I didn't really mean that, but there was a lovely S1 CT on ebay a week ago which fetched peanuts, so buying a complete car as a replacement is the way to go, surely.
If the cars are cheap the engines must be also, they are not in demand like diesels, so tend to get scrapped on value alone.

Re: replace the engine on a 95 2l turbo
That's my quote - for the car advertised in the Cars available section Paul.
There's a set of cars far too good to weigh in to the crusher and worthy of
at least offering donor spares or being recommisioned onto the road to
offer good service for as good few years - no BS, they would still be
mothballed for that reason if my rented storage space wasn't being sold
out from under me.
I'm intending to post pictures of them all asap.
