Post by savoy » Sun Dec 09, 2012 1:03 pm

HELLO
CAN ANYONE HELP ???
AFTER STORING A NEW FRONT WINDSCREEN FOR AN XM FOR YEARS.ITS NOW BEEN SOLD AND GONE.
NOW I NEED ONE.
DOES ANYONE HAVE A GOOD CLEAN OR NEW ONE ABOUT PLEASE??
NEEDED FOR THIS LOVELY RED ESTATE WE HAVE IN STOCK.

[UP TO DATE NEWS---- CYL HEAD IS OFF AND BEEN PRESSURE TESTED AND SKIMMED,
ALL OK AND WILL BE REBUILT THIS WEEK.
9 CYL HEAD BOLTS CAME OUT OK THE LAST ONE SNAPPED OFF HALF AN INCH OUT OF THE BLOCK.[WHAT A COW].
IF YOU HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WE USED A TOOL FROM SNAP ON THAT SLEEVED OVER THE TOP OF THE BOLT,ZAPPED IT WITH POWER FOR AROUND 10 SECONDS.
NEVER SEEN A THICK BOLT TURN RED HOT AS QUICK AND THE BROKEN PART UNSCREWED.COULD NOT HAVE BELIEVED IT IF I HAD NOT SEEN AND DONE THE JOB MYSELF.
IF ANYONE NEEDS FURTHER HELP WITH REMOVING BROKEN STUDS OR BOLTS WE MAYBE ABLE TO HELP.
TOOL COST OVER £1000.00.
DON,T CARE BLOCK WOULD HAVE PROBABLY BEEN SCRAPPED IF UNABLE TO REMOVE BROKEN BOLT.[IT WAS PROPER SEIZED.YOU ONLY GET ONE CHANCE AT REMOVING THESE USUALLY WELD A NUT ON TO THE BOLT AND PREY].
SORRY FOR STORY MAY HELP SOMEONE STRUGGLING.

Don't be sorry for the story, very interesting!
(sorry do not have windscreen)
But I still don't understand how you got the bolt out after it being red hot. You say unscrewed but how, it was broken off? by the zap machine?
I hope I'll never need it though!

greetings

Hello
will explain, electrode was placed over the broken stud and electrons are fired at the broken stud. This warms up very quick and the heat travels down the stud and frees the threads from the rusty block threads.this can then be unscrewed by a stud extractor,[socket type].
hope this helps explain.

Hi all, a bit surprised at "rusty" head bolt, don't know engine type, but xud's are put in lubed so possibly a result of cylinder head water leak or something more sinister.

Hi Malcolm, I too thank you for explanation (also nice to see the use of the lower case text in your explanation /\ ;) )

BTW how have you got on with the clutch QUADRANT as you not given any updates to that thread ?

Robert, I'd be guessing (But expect its the one he's recently BOUGHT off Chris 'citroenmad') that had the failed HG which may explain your theory ?

I would guess the gasket has been leaking into that bolt for a while, so caused corrosion.

Having done a few head gaskets, I've never had a bolt snap, but they do creak a bit as they come out.

I wonder if an ARK welder would have been able to heat the bolt sufficiently to free it?
