Yeah, Tim rues the day he didn't put the old points in the boot. Anyway, car long gone. Owns a C1 now.
That is shocking you can't get cover. What did you do before? Can't you join the RAC or AA then. Must just be UK only. If your part of the EU, can you not get cover from a French company?
Well it's not like it is a complete disaster...You're going to the country where these cars were mainly sold. So you should be fine! On family holidays in my parents Renault, we were not worried, as there is a Renault garage in every town.
I would throw in the boot...which is probably in there already, some coolant and water, LHM and cable ties! Haynes good plan.
Don't worry.....just enjoy France!

Re: These, are the voyages of the starship Turby D.
Getting cover in the Netherlands for such an old car is quite impossible too I think. I'm surprised it's still possible in the UK. I used to have cover in the Netherlands but never had anything like it in Ireland.
And our commutes are for some parts not covered by GSM so maybe that's why I do try and look after our cars as far as I can.
Having said that: the first time I broke down in a Ford transit, in the middle of nowhere with no phone coverage, the first passer by towed (!) me to the next village so...
I'm not naive, it won't happen in the first time in France but after trying for hours in France, some Englishman!!! towed me again in the Ford Transit so......

Wow...I guess we're lucky here then. You can get two types of cover. Your car is covered or you the person is covered and what ever car you are in, you can be rescued. There are different types of cover within those. So you can get basic breakdown, or complete package of get you home, home service, continued journey, ect ect.
Our family gets surprise surprise, a family cover through Tescos who do a deal with RAC. We get over £200 of full package for under £100 for three people. Was four.....
If it is based on the person, it doesn't matter what the car is. Good system.

Re: These, are the voyages of the starship Turby D.
I had cover on all my cars until this year when I swapped to personal cover in any car.
I can't see why you can't get cover for your car, but it's an old fashioned diesel, they don't break down.
Take some tools, gaffer tape, fuel hose, water, LHM and tye-wraps and all will be well.
I took my first XM for a motoring holiday in France, we just went where we fancied for 2,800 miles. Each place we stopped we either found a hotel or just lazed on the beach until late afternoon, then found a hotel. I love the Cote-Azure, the cosmopolitan feeling and nightlife are great.

That is one region of France I have never been too...the south coast. I've been to almost every other part. I think the reason was, my parents in the 70's went to the south of France with my uncle and aunt..dads older brother and wife...in a Maxi.
Which was broken into...so never to be repeated!!
Jaap...what about a spare hydraulic pump belt. Take the one of the black car.

No! Buy a new spare! HP belt should be OK on that car. I had it in France for 6 months in 2008; and wouldn't hesitate on taking it back there.

You could buy a new one over there of course.
I was thinking as an emergency only using the one of the black car.
It will be fine, as Will said...it's a derv.

Everything that can go wrong will go wrong of course
But not all the time, happy days.
Mrs. Diesel wouldn't start when al set and ready to go
My own fault I suppose since fixing those brake pad warning lights caused a lot of drain on the battery. Even more so because at first I didn't know you need to press the brake pedal to get the 'system' on line..
But after that 3 hours to Dublin, 2 hours sleep on a Stena line bench, and a splendid very synny trip to Portsmouth, sunroof open all the time. Relaxed for a bit at stonehenge
Today from Caen to Les Eglises de Dompieres: been down south enough times now.
Fuel consumption almost 47 MPG with full blast over the peage, even a Citroen gearbox in the boot for some one else...

Not to bad except now it's started raining..but not for long I am sure :~)
