1998 XM near Hereford

I am focussing my attention on the silver car in High Wycombe as I generally prefer the saloon but I have asked the seller if he would sart lower.
We'll see what the response is

"No sorry Colin. I've had a look at completed items they don't match this one for condition or mileage. This model is going to be a classic very soon now, and so the starting price is totally realistic for a good one with this mileage. If I had the space undercover I would keep it, knowing that it will start appreciating within a couple of years. I've heard from a friend in the trade that many XMs have been scrapped under the current scheme, so by definition they will become rarer year on year. Added to that, unlike the 6 Citroen CXs I had, XMs don't rust seriously as critical parts are galvanised... Regards, Nicholas"

What would all you be prepared to pay for that car?

Personally i wouldnt have thought the seller would be that far out, maybe nearer £850? I'd say if that were a diesel then possibly more money. Im not interested in buying it but if i were I'd probably pay the starting price, but thats just me. Id want to have a good look around it first though.

I'd agree the asking price is wildly optimistic for a petrol auto TCT estate no mater how straight the bodywork
is with fully working roof and windows etc. The price would be top end were the car a more in demand 2.1 or 2.5TD.
Petrols just DON'T command the money unless they're a third of this mileage or a rare 24v v6.

I may have to eat my words saying this of course because with most things you only need one buyer who may see the
price as chicken feed compared to £25k for a new C5 estate etc. but there'd be bidding for this blue estate at or
from around £650 but basically the car's just going to sit there on ebay for ever at £950. Anything is only ever worth
what somebody is prepared to pay at that time on that day. Thwarted efforts had a near immaculate FCSH saloon 16v
of similar vintage but significantly less miles and IIRC it sold for £800. Whilst I'm not sure if anything what this proves,
it means people will bid more than banger money obviously but even at that age the mileage was a lot less than the
120kish miles of this ebay blue estate. Being an estate would command a bit more for those that seek one out specifically
maybe but historically the big Cit saloons have always commanded more money than the estate equivalent - just
look at prices for D'S and Cx's.

At 116k miles I wouldn't go anywhere near this one with the longest barge pole going as it's an automatic!!

Yes its a shame really, if im honest a TCT auto estate would possibly be the last on my list of combinations. However, you cant always be picky when good ones are scarce. For people like us whos Xming mileage is so low economy is not an issue it would be perfect: a nice big estate car to throw the dogs in the boot of, air con, good condition, a pretty lively performer with an auto box, it would be great, and all for under £1000. Which is, incidentally, the same price as a full set of Michelins for the C6 - makes it seem like a bargain! Although the cheaper the better and a realistic price id agree with you Andrew, £650 would be a better starting point.

Its just me, i cant get over how cheap decent Xms appear to be, and i mean decent not ropey ones, this looks a good one to me. Apart from the home made rear wash/wipe fix . Ok its not low mileage but its not high either, i dont see why it wont still be going in a good few years time. If i had that estate and could only get £600 for it id probably keep it. It also goes with the fact i dont like seeing Xms being scrapped, i think the cheaper it is the less likely people are going to spend money keeping it running and the more likely they will be scrapped as a result.

I thought Thwartedefforts sold his for £1000?, Either way i think that was a very good buy for the new ower. Looked stunning in the pictures.

Unless its mega low mileage and in excellent condition, or a very rare spec it seems they are worth very little. I do wonder if that will ever change.

Then again they are worth what people are prepared to pay, just look at WHM and he does seem to sell them eventually.

I hadn't noticed that till you pointed it out. I was thinking of doing the same thing myself but trying to keep the cover over the spindle to look a bit neater. I've given up trying different motors and caps - the plastic in all the caps seems to have gone too brittle to last any length of time. But then, mine is somewhat higher mileage, and the bodywork is not in as good condition now.

As I see it there has always been two markets in XM's, two different standards of car for sale and two different price structures.
The informed expert Citroen enthusiast paying over the odds for a well above average high spec XM.
All the while the Citroen dealers taking any XM in as a part exchange on a new Citroen car.
Prior to the scrappage initive round here the standard Citroen dealer part exchange allowance was £300 for an XM.
They usually then disposed of the cars as trade cars to local Citroen Indys where they could otherwise to scrap.
Time and price has long passed (5 years old & £6000ish) where any local Citroen dealer would risk selling an XM as a secondhand car.
Over the years a few specialist Citroen Indys continued the trade in good high spec, high price XM's.
We are seeing the last knockings of this with perhaps a couple of still XM active traders offering at above normal trade prices.
I shall be very surprised if any make it through to selling the XM as a high priced classic.
The informed expert who got a good car and now wants to sell still prices it on the above average, rarity scale.
The rest of the market sees it as a £300ish old car with a potential high cost to keep on the road.
Sadly a good proportion of the original enthusiast buyers found out the hard way from the repair and maintenance costs that their
above average XM was nearer a tarted up £300 one. The reason for this is simple.
Well above average or not they were all sourced from XM's that were traded in.
It relied on the expertise of the specialist indy to pick out and obtain at the right price the best cars and a relatively small number of
enthusiast buyers prepared to pay quite a bit over the odds.
