Made some progress on the xm today. I have finally got round to cleaning and treating the rust on the strut tops before they got bad. Turned out it only had some surface rust so wasnt too difficult to deal with. some before and after photos below.I'll probably give it another coat of kurust and a few coats of black paint tomorrow.
Im hoping to clean and paint the front subframe sometime this week while the weathers nice.

This months break down has turned out to be the alternator, it only charges just under 13v. It has failed twice in 6 months. Will have to remove it again and take it to be reconditioned.
I will also have to add another relay to the starter because its sometimes a bit reluctant to start and its also getting a bit annoying.
Does anyone know how to connect another relay to the circuit? I have bought a five pin relay but i have no idea what to connect it to.
The cooling issues have also been sorted and hopefully i have uploaded the photos right.

Richard

Richard.

Incase you wondered what happened there i edited your post for the links to work.. they didnt show up before because you had a space between the first square bracket and the url .. there shouldnt be.

Anyway working fine now. They look good but what are they like under the wing in the wheel arch. This is where the real condition lies..

Have a look at this post abut half-way down where I explain how to do it on an S2 ES9 V6.. It should be very similar for yours..

And here in Self Help:

I've done it on several Xantias and a couple of XMs now..

It has been a while since i wrote anything about my car.
I always enjoy reading about other XM's on here.
since my last post many months ago my xm has been unusually reliable so not too much for me to moan about.
it has been suprisingly good on fuel too, on a 70 mile drive back to uni earlier it managed an impressive 32mpg. Not bad from an ancient v6.
Over the summer i managed to make some small improvements to the car. The strut tops not look beautiful after having a few coats of hammerite applied which should keep the rust away for a while. I will clean and paint the front subframe soon aswell.

When washing the car yesterday i noticed one of the pipes connected to the strut had split. it had lost about half a litre of LHM. I removed the broken bit and reconnected it.
Not sure what that pipe is actually for as it doesnt look pressurised and is not secures with any hose clamps. A nice simple repair. If only all repairs were that easy...

The air con has been broken all summer and I have had to open the windows, those have started failing aswell.
The cables on the offside rear window have snapped so i ordered an e-crofting kit off ebay thinking it would be a simple repair. I managed to break two drill bits getting the cover off and then despite measuring the old cables many times cut one of the new cable a bit too short so the window didn't fully close, I sort of left it after that for a few months but Whilst in a supermarket in Belluno I went to the bicycle section and bought a brake cable which should work for the window. I still haven't got round to fitting it though. As you can see from the photo below the window is being held closed with the red bar. the rest of that door now lives in the dolly.

Hi Richard,
The pipe which had split is a low presure leak back pipe still available from citroen as is the fixing clip get two as they go brittle and will snap off again, they are not expensive.

Not at all Richard :D

There's been a real rash of those leakoff pipes failing recently. Must be the time of the year. I caught one on my Activa that was about to go.

They're about £13 a pop and are common across the Xantia and XM...

might replace those leak pipes just to prevent this happening again in future.
I take it they're the same hose as fuel pipes?

Yes, but the problem is Richard they have a moulded 'foot' on them that sits on the side of the strut. Always vebest to replace them as repairs are rarely successful for very long.

The Citroen part Number is 95 050 399

None on ebay at the moment so far as I can see
