Hydraulic Fluid Level query

Post by rustytractor » Sat Feb 08, 2014 6:47 pm

I haven't checked the fluid level on my 2000 V6 before so consulted the manual, put the suspension on high, left the engine running and opened the bonnet to take a look. I wasn't having any problems with it - it just seemed prudent to check it.

According to the manual I expected to see a yellow disc in between the two red lines (or probably lower as I'd never checked it before) but saw a what looked like a red disc fully at the top of the inspection glass.

Are some of these indicators red and do I assume the level is too high as the indicator was above both red indicators or do these level indicators sometimes get stuck - see attached picture.

The car is relatively new to me but has been fantastic up until now with zero maintenance requirements (I actually forgot where the bonnet release was !!).

Any/all advice gratefully received.

That is the indicator, it is reading high, sometimes they stick and need a good thump on the top of the tank to dislodge them.

Yep. A little thump/gentle whack - or, remove the metal retaining "clip", lift the Octopus assembly, and waggle a little until the float drops.

Sorry, no dipstick, Tony.

To the O/p. I suspect the tank is a bit over-full. It's not an issue but a oil may escape the lid during hard cornering.

When the oil filler cap is off should you be able to see oil and if so how far below the cap would be normal ?

With the suspension on high it will be quite low.

If it doesn't spill out with the suspension on low, it's unlikely to be an issue.
