XM 2.1 SED hatch
Hi all,
It is with a heavy heart that I have decided that my XM has to go.
I've had this one for over seven years now, and I'm a sentimental old fool so I'd rather it went off to someone who will either get it back on the road or break it so that other XMs can be kept going.
It failed the MoT last year, and I have been hanging on to it with a vague plan to repair it and use it, but realistically it ain't going to happen as there always seems to be something going wrong with my other cars.
Anyway, enough of the story telling, a few details:
1993 XM 2.1 SED (K-reg) manual
Dark green metallic paint work. The paint it pretty poor. Loads of scratches, someone keyed down the passenger side years ago. The OS front wing is dented and has been poorly resprayed at some time.
Black leather interior. This i sin mostly good condition, except for the drivers seat which has a split on the seat back bolster.
Five alloy wheels
Towbar (trailer use only, no caravans)
Mileage showing is 193k. I bought it at 140k
Engine starts fine. If it has been standing for a while (ie several days) it creates smoke at startup, but this clears within 10 seconds. Haven't noticed any smoke when driving.
Suspension goes up and down as usual. I replaced all seven spheres twice during my time with the car.
Clutch cable went a while back so I had a replacement quadrant made up in alloy, so that should last a while
It failed the MoT on:
NSR tyre below min depth
OSF ball joint dust cover damaged
NSF anti roll bar excessive play at ball joint (needs a new drop link)
NSF wheel bearing has excessive play
NS outer rear sill corroded (garage quoted £40 to do the welding, so it can't be much)
And the ABS light is on.
I've got various spares odds and ends in the garage which I will stick in the boot - window motor, clutch cable, wing mirror, driveshaft etc I'll have a root around.
Car starts runs and drives, but obviously isn't taxed, MoT or insured so you need a trailer something to tow it. This was an everyday car used for family life. It took the kids to school, the family camping, carried bikes and generally served us very well. It is not, and I can't imagine it ever will be, a shiny pampered classic. But it won't take a huge amount of effort to get it MoT'd again.
Car is located in Barnstaple, North Devon.

Re: XM 2.1 SED hatch
No, I wouldn't break it, far from it.
I'm actually thinking of selling my XM and getting something more mundane, I just don't have the time to fettle it anymore- family and marriage gets in the way!
That said, I bet a 2.1 would be easier and cheaper to keep on the road than a 2.5.

Re: XM 2.1 SED hatch
Deafenatly tim.
manual 2.1s can do in excess of 50mpg driven correctly.. and a slightly simpler engine to work on and the manual box on the 2.1 doesnt blunt the true engines performance.. and go rather well..

What are you after from a 2.1? I might have to save a 2.1 getting lost!! Manual one remember. A bit rarer..

Re: XM 2.1 SED hatch
I was staying out of this one because even I thought it was criminal to break it.
Its almost a turn up with the bits, fit and drive to successful MOT job.

Re: XM 2.1 SED hatch
You could drive it back as your diving it home to get repaired but cost of repair bits, and time may put most off for what is a damaged car still. No offence intended as it's tidier than mine I reckon!
