Just spotted this on autotrader, though tid stick it up here as ive never seen another S2 car this colour, wasnt aware this was available. It was available on Xantias i know, looks smart on the Xm actually:

Right, I'm in moaning mode right now, so:

1/ why oh why 99% of XMs in the UK are automatic!!!!!!!! grrrrrrrrrr

2/ why *that* many XMs (for a modern car) get a rear hatch that doesn't align properly to the rest of the car -as if they were assembled at a Lada factory in the 80s or smthing!!!!!
I wonder, is it a matter of adjusting smthing? OR they didn't want to alienate BX owners completely from the new higher quality standards

I should imagine most were auto, because being an executive car of the time, this was the popular choice. For example there are very few manual 5 Series BMW's of the time, a lot of Rover 800's were auto (the V6 especially).

I'm not a fan of autos, not in smaller cars anyway, but in an XM i think it would suit it.

For heaven's sake, this old handbrake chestnut again? I'm not buying it as the real reason nobody dare
drive a manual Xm; its not that big a deal honestly. Release of the handbrake on even the steepest hill
ever is simply one hand operated lever (sound familiar) after the clutch is engaged and biting. Putting
on the handbrake with the left foot is the only new 'big deal' and this is only once the car is in neutral
and held with the right foot on the brakes as per a normal handbrake. Yes you need to lock the foot
lever down with the hand operated lock but it isn't that difficult either!

Anyhow. Where'd the electric armrest everyone loves so much get fitted then?

When I drive one of the Xantiae I regularly find my left foot looking for another pedal on the left...

Ohhh that car is very nice, the champagne suits it, never seen a sereis 2 like that before. Looks excellent.

I think the foot operated parking brake is superb, I much perfer it to a handbrake lever, and the lever is always further over, biased for the LHD markets where these are designed for. I much perfer having my electronic armrest, and all the room that there is, than having a lever in place of it.

Although I am biased and think that the automatic is the way forward, I can't be arsed changing gears, I'll let the car do that! If my automatic had Diravi, then It would be even easier to drive, less effort required. My daily runner is my first automatic, I didn't explicitely search for an automatic XM, I wanted a good diesel XM, and this one was available at the time, and happened to be an auto.

Hi All

The answer about the many XM's with autobox is probably due to Citroen's using the autobox as a marketing feature in 1992/1993.
In 1990 the autobox was a £845 at cost special option. Usually order, pay extra and wait for the auto or take that manual now might
well have been the salesmans line. In 1992/3 they were offering the autobox as a no cost option for all models.
No doubt they geared up production of RHD auto cars ready for the rush in 1992. Filled the showrooms with autos and then factory fields,
then remaindered them at knock down prices during the later part of 1993. Might even have stuck "Prestige" badges on them to aid selling.

Yes i remember reading that the prestige badged cars were done to shift some low spec cars that were lingering around at a time uncomfortably close to the release of the facelift MK2 model.

As already stated nice looking car/colour its just a shame its got the Auto-box fitted
