gaiters

Post by hydroman » Wed Jul 30, 2014 11:39 am

I guess you mean the ram pin. I bought rubber ones, they wouldn't stay on even using steel clips and so I reverted to the citroen part. They will just squeeze over over the pin, takes some effort, lubrication and a bit of help with a cycle tyre lever. I also boiled them for a bit but not sure if this made it much easier. Good luck!

Further in relation to steering, I have just taken delivery of a steering ram for a V6 variant, purchased on the chance that it is interchangeable with that on the 2.5, although not the other way around. A slimmer ram, same fittings and length, but I was surprised to see that the neartside end is removable (unscrews). Shame they aren't all like that, it would make nearside gaiter replacement much easier.

Well, I have the original citroen ones. They sent me 2 different types, one says continental and both are plastic. I will use one of them. And I am using a car lift for the first time in my xm career:)

I had a Continental one for the other, easy side. It did soften quite a bit when I put it in boiling hot water for a while...if it will be enough I don't know.

Getting used now to MOReen's replacement:

Image

After an initial hiccough on the way north when some of the LHM decided it wanted to leave, all has been pretty good and I thank Jim for his after sales help and advice.

I am finding quite a difference in the ambience of the car's interior, it seems much more "modern" than the series 1 and I quite like that, but there are many who don't. The driving experience is great and I love the understated power the ES9 motor delivers. I am looking forward to doing some long journeys in the coming months.

On buying the car, I knew there were a couple of jobs to be done and I have someone lined up to do these next week; his rates are way more reasonable than my usual independent, so if the job is a good one then I shall return. Also to be done before the winter sets in are an oil service and replacement of the front discs and pads and I have those on order at the moment.

I seem to have been pretty busy since the big car change and so I haven't made a great deal of progress with beautifying, but I have used some "Iron Out" on it and that made a significant difference to the look of the horizonatal services. It has struggled to have much impact on the wheels so I shall have to consider whether a professional refurb is warranted/affordable. Not sure.

At the moment, I am trying Russ's suggested chemical treatment of the headlight lenses on a spare set of lamps Jim gave me to see if there is a significant improvement to be made - if there is I shall swap them over but these spares are pretty clear to start out with. Details of the technique are in August's Citroenian. I do hope the weather forecast is right and tomorrow will show somew sun as it essential for the treatment and right now it is persisting down. Could be worse, I could be camping or have an XM with a sun roof!

I hope the lens soaking works for you Rob. Strong sunshine is the key. It might need two soaks to get a good reaction.

And I am now getting used to looking out at a Mandarin XM. It was very odd to begin with. But I do love the colour and it has been a hit with family and friends. :D

In don't know if the material and the reason for the yellowing is in fact anything similar but you might want to Google for Retr0bright. Might be worth a try...
