Brake pads

Hi everyone,
I need to replace the pads on the front on my 1992 2.1 TD the RP is 5740 so I think that makes it a series 1.5.
I was looking on eBay, but it seems there are many different specifications and I want to make sure I get the correct set.
They're twice the price from GSF from what I can see.
Anyone have a part number or suggestions?

Just search for front pads up to 94 build year, if you find ones spec for pre 94 they will be correct, I've just got some new ones myself from ebc. You will have Bendix brakes, some larger engined later cars had larger Bosch brakes.

Very early Xms have a smaller pad. I don't know when they changed over though...

Measure the diameter of the disks.

276mm dia and they are early XM discs that start life at 22mm thick.
Pad backing plates have steel "V" points at the quarter points.
Look at ebay item 360694422640 for photos etc.

283mm dia and they are the standard for most XM's discs start life at 26mm thick.
Pads look very similar but slightly larger and smooth over the quarter points.
Look at ebay item 121569706984 H/B Pip visible in second photo.

A metal pimple on the backing plate must fit in a castleated slot in the piston head (handbrake auto adjust).
Not all makes of pads have the pimple on the pad back.
Do not buy pug 605 pads as all 4 are usually without pimples(rear wheel handbrake so not needed).
See ebay item 121514930797 for an example. Photo misses pip area but text gives Pug part number.
They claim to fit XM but needs very careful checking out to be sure.

I will try to look up the change over point. ORGA 5228.

The ebay item examples chosen above are simply to indicate the two different types for the earlier XM's.
Not chosen as price or a manufacturer type recommendation.

Very helpful thanks everyone!
I've had a few problems with the brakes binding on the drivers side at front.
I replaced the caliper, but it's still binding and getting hot on motorway journeys.
I wonder whether the doseur valve might need adjusting. In the Haynes manual it specifies 9mm gap and it looks as if mine is set a little close. I'm however apprehensive to fiddle with this.. Obvious reasons.

Ordered, now just need to fit them and sort the binding problem.

Andy, it's easy adjusting the Doseur valve bolt. As long as it rests and lightly touches but not activates the button on the valve, it will be fine. It's if it presses on the rubber button it will activate the brakes. Make sure the pivot itself is nicely oiled and moves easily and freely.

Failure to set the pip into the castletions of the piston is a common cause of brake binding.
No pip inserted lets the auto wind up of the parking brake just keep tightening until there is enough friction to stop it.
At worst this can lead to red hot disks and smoke if let run too long.

About 1991. A series 1.5 car will have hte larger disks so the pads don't have the pips projecting out from the backing plate edge.
They still have the piston locating pip, just not the spacing ones on the outer edge.
GSF sell Bendix pads, which are the original ones.
