I've been in the rather wonderful position of having nothing much to report on the XM recently (disaster will now follow!).

I have been using the Polo rather a lot recently as I have been doing some exam invigilating and it has meant a lot of short journeys and leaving the car in a school car park. The Polo has a lot to recommmend it in that it has good performance and excellent economy for a 15 year old car, but it is a tool to get from one place to another, I don't get out of it and turn to look and enjoy what I see.

What I would really like to do, now my children are becoming less reliant on me having a car they can borrow from time to time, is exchange the Polo for another 2cv, but have you seen the prices? They defy all logic! When I sold my last one, about two years ago, with a decent MOT and in quite presentable condition it fetched around £2k; it seems to replace it with one no better would cost me about double, and after supporting seven years of my daughters' university student life on a pension that ain't going to happen. As for my other fancies, Renault 4 and Renault 16...?

Expecting to get to the Northern next week end as it pretty local and looking forward to meeting up with many of you.
Regards

Rob

You know you are in West Auckland when you are following a riderless pony down the main street...

I'm considering buying a BX 1.4 to replace the Polo. Am I mad? :?:

Not at all....but the 19RD will be a lot more fun, and much more frugal.

If you do get a petrol BX, go for the 16 rather than the 14, and make sure it's had its carb jets replaced with the Peugeot ones, to eliminate the ghastly flat spot and transform performance.

BX is a terrific car to drive and work on.

Old red bus chalks up another MOT, now at nearly 216,000 miles and going strong. Replaced a rear cylinder and a headlight bulb. Good for another year.

That's fantastic! :o Did you ever bother getting a door to match the others?

Really pleased to hear you have manged to keep the old bugger going - and with so little fuss; 2.5 FTW as some say!

No, not bothered about a mis-matched door. Probably going to demote it to a weekender (its handy for all the sailing gear) as I have purchased a C3 diesel for day to day use, 65mpg, quite nippy. Yes, I have a seven year uni daughter too, did maths and philosophy, now starting 4 year grad medicine. I'm not a pensioner, probably never will be as I don't forsee being able to stop work any time soon!

Do you think She will actually use these to get a job, or will be an eternal student?
My Sister has been an eternal student and a Niece now has a desirable degree, but isn't using it.

My seven years are two daughters overlapping. Daughter 1 has a law degree from a decent uni (for those who are snobby about such things) and is working in a Santander call centre. She has however managed to save enough from that pittance to buy and run her own car and buy her first house, so I am very proud of her for that. Number 2 daughter is just completing her masters and has secured a job as a consultant occupational psychologist. Unfortunately she obviously has to move darn sarth to do this. She will be earning more but at terrific comparative cost.
