Early SED - a new chapter

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Re: Early SED for sale - engine number is single digit !

Further info, I have started this morning with the post intercooler pipe disconnected from the plenum. Antisocial levels of noise, but it seemed to rev up okay but I didn't try too hard. Oddly while it was disconnected the post intercooler pipe spat out a small amount of water onto the plenum where it was resting - it's an air intercooler so condensation? Reconnect proper air feed and then disconnect the oil breather trap, revs okay presumably because runaway amounts of cold oil can't bypass turbo seals but does smokes at idle in a way that it didn't. So turbo duff probably.

Also to add the engine wiring loom needs replacing, all of half a dozen wires. Many moons ago the wire to the stop solenoid chafed against the engine, shorted out and brought me to a halt on the M25 at 3am. I got some wire out the boot, as you do, screwed onto the stop solenoid and wound it round the battery +ve. The loom on the front of the engine had all cooked but for the starter motor so I was able to start no problem. At the side of the road for less than five minutes, try that with your modern diesels. I only ever replaced the solenoid wire, the AC hadn't worked for years.

Make me a low offer for collection by the end of next week although I am not around this weekend but could free up Saturday morning. Alternatively i will start stripping tomorrow. I have 20 years worth of receipts so at least you would be able to see what was done over its life.

Well I AM TOO far away to take her, SO my guess is no one else will, so when you do strip her down MAKE SURE you strip her down to this level:

I even tried to get the screen out and was highly peed off when it cracked! It wasnt that old and had a sun strip in it...

Impressive. Sadly almost nothing will be taken off it before it goes - certainly front struts. Are there any silly shortages, difficult to get hold of bits? Easily removed bits.

I have kept it all this time because I know it is valuable to a small group of people. I'm feeling the pressure but this is my problem because for now I live in Twickenham and my original efforts at rotating cars through France was a nightmare for years as they had to come back for an MOT,

- I have two parking spaces on the drive, one in front of the garage so only one space can be a car that is SORN if I want to access the garage.
- I have a 1.5 length, single garage, currently housing the 2.5 estate that recently blew an over axle pipe just as I was going to let it down for the MOT one sleep later.
- I park the V6 on the road, pay £80 every year for a permit so the SED could be saved.
- There's a small trailer (3m metres total) in the garage normally, currently in mrs' garage with her flat ready for moving her out in two weeks. In fact the move was meant to be relaxed between garages, 2.5 has messed that up. Trailer can go vertical in my garage with drawbar removed, but not a five minute job and needed now anyway.
- Mrs has a BMW Z3 that she always wanted, has said I can get rid to save XMs, but that has to live in my single garage (insurance) from two weeks. It is currently "on holiday" parked in the street somewhere. Mrs has C4GP as daily driver.

It don't work, too many things and too few spaces. Take the 2.5 if that is more tempting to travel a long way, then the SED can go back in the space that doesn't block the garage, Z3 in garage, I'll put the trailer in my mother's garage in Nottingham. Then we come up with another plan to break the SED but I can't do a full job like that on my driveway.

Is there any way using a third party to shift it would make it worthwhile to the community? No idea what that costs. Take the 2.5 as well if a man with transporter can shift two more cheaply, brand new rads, although i'd quite like the new Michelins for the V6.

Chill. Spend time with the family. Rediscover the kids. Forget the car: there will be others. Priorities...
This is all probably out of order here, but . . . . . .

Does it have a towing eye cover???

Sadly. Cannot commit to buying another XM this side of Christmas, I bought 2 in November and have another with a specialist undertaking some remedial repair. Any other time I would have bitten your hand off for this.

Before the turbo was shot, I would have said

- borrow good tyres off another XM as approaching limit, actually what I did last time, didn't then replace due to occasional water loss
- sill welding from sitting four years
- exercise the brakes a lot on the way to the test

but of course the turbo is now shot and diesel runaway isn't going to pass the emissions test. You could jam the wastegate open (edited to add and block the oil feed!).

Making up a doseur pipe to get it back in the air shows I'm determined but rock and hard place.
