I have three things to say.....

1. Thank you so much to all who advised, suggested and helped with the Rev counter saga. Always very helpful.
2. Apologies for my complete lack of electrical knowledge and inability to read electrical diagrams. Must have been very frustrating for you all!
3. It's finally fixed. and yes it was simply the ruddy crank sensor in the end. Bit of a saga getting hold of the right sensor, I expect they are all the same, but appernelty there are differences between mk1 and mk2 2.1's.
The company that sent me the part, sent me a used one. Clearly had been in a car before. It was covered in grime. So I had to wait for a replacement which arrived last Monday. Finally fitted it this morning. I curse the fool who put the bolt behind the sensor! Other way round would have been nice. But there you go. I wasn't expecting any success, but it appears to be all working now... And long may it continue.

The only thing I found on the old sensor to suggest why it was at fault, apart from a lot of muck, was a little part of the lead had worn away exposing a bit of wire. Maybe it was this causing it. Who knows. Anyway I have rerouted the lead so it won't happen again.

I did, but at 170k plus old, and John suggesting only try a new one, I went for that.

What confused me was why the automatic warning kept popping up. I can only deduce that the signal to the speed sensor was constantly being interrupted and causing the Hydractive ECU to oh you need to be in Auto suspension mode now.

Anyway, I hope your Cider was as sweet as the my new sensor!!!!

Certainly has. I don't I know, I've extracted three engines now and a flipping sensor flummoxes me! c'est la vie!

Have to report the rubber weather strips have done wonders for the wind noise. I put a strip on each wing cap on the door join. Such a simple change but it's worked a treat. Noticed today a neighbours Saab 9-5 has the same thing but factory fitted. Good as a Saab now!
