Re: 1997 Green XM 2.1TD VSX Manual car for sale
Back from the MoT today - it failed, which came as no surprise!
The following are the fail items:
1. Rear suspension (both sides) needs replaced! I knew that one, and it's a painless expense!
2. Exhaust emits an excessive level of smoke for a turbo charged car - I was told to give it an Italian service for that one!
3. service brake efficiency below requirements - basically there is almost no braking (40%) on the rear and when the brakes do start working, the rear suspension starts going down - perhaps the new spheres would balance that one out - although a few decent emergency stops may also work!
advisories
1. both front tyres worn close to legal limit
2. both front indicators slightly discoloured
3. oil leak from engine - I'll need to investigate that one.
4. slight dampness on suspension pump
That's it!
I doubt any of it is major - and all fixable - I will confess that I have stolen the rubber mats and replaced them with cloth from my car, have swapped over my parcel shelf with the one in my car, removed the cargo net from the boot, swapped the aerial for the long one on my car and also will be stealing the rear mudflaps from it.
Having given it a wash and a good look round, the front near side wing is slightly pushed in, it has a few stone chips commensurate with a life spent going between Edinburgh/Glasgow and middle England every six to ten days for six years. The near side display has a couple of lines out, the rhs is a little faded but still readable. The keypad cover for the immobiliser code is broken and the aforementioned sunroof works up and down but not back to front - I am suspicious that the button or the supply to the motor is out as it does nothing rather than make the noises of a stuck motor. The plip key has dead batteries so I am unsure if it will need recoded.

It drives nicely, the steering is tight and if I did not know better I would say it was a 100k car rather than a 180k car. It has a nice bit of go and rear suspension apart, I can hear the sensors working on the suspension centre spheres but it is very bouncy at the rear - fronts feel fine just now but the accumulator sphere does need a change!
Let me know if you want to see anything else ...

Hi Campbell,
I'd MOT that car and keep it. It looks remarkably straight for a car that has done 180K miles. Those strut tops like brand new as well.

what would I do with two - the other normal car has to be a convertible for swmbo! and mine, although lower spec has had a lot spent on it now and I won't recover the cost!
I want to see this one back on the road and it is being sold for roughly what it will have cost me, as I'll probably give it an oil and filter plus coolant change before it goes!
Interestingly, it was made on 1 October 1996 - my birthday so languished for a year before Citroen registered it for themselves.

I had two Ransomes MG5 and an MG2 crawlers when I was young. My dad had a Rollo Croftmaster too as well as a Lister Autotruckred_dwarfers wrote:PM Sent![]()

I was going tonight to get a quote from my garage for the work and looking at the oil leak - pricing up a new battery for mine too so I can add a battery that is more powerful than 350Ah.
