My mistake, this one must have been a Cat C then.

It does say on the logbook for this vehicle that it's been substantially damaged. It says so in Roy's advert.

I've just spoken to the seller who has confirmed it as Roy's old car.

Are you sure it says anything on the V5, I'm not aware of any marker like that being applied to V5 after a car is written off. I know someone who was recently sold a written off car and because the trader had performed an HPI check didn't perform their own. They only found out when trading it into a Mercedes dealer, who performed a fresh HPI check.
there was nothing on the V5 at all. No reason why there should be, that is just a registration document.

Seeing the damage in the link wouldn't put me off, just the price is too high. I would be surprised if that made it to Cat-C write off it's not enough damage. But both Cat D and C are just financial or inconvenience issues, not vehicle integritiy.

Next time we have a Rally I'll get my paint gauge out. i think most, if not all, cars will show some repairs done.

According to Roy it does show on the logbook. An old car of mine was written off for a bonnet and bumper as well and it was Cat C'd due to the value of the repair against the value of the car. As the insurance can only use genuine brand new manufacturer parts it soon mounts up. It did clearly state on the logbook for that car that is was substantially damaged as well.

I've spoken to the seller about it this afternoon. The car does sound immaculate.

He was offered £6000 for it last summer but turned it down. Wishes he hadn't though.

He's heard from 3 people about it today and has been offered almost the asking price for it. To be hoenst, if it's kept in that sort of condition with a low mileage it'll be a future classic.

The only differences between that XM and my XM are that this one has done 4k miles and the guy spent almost a grand having the roughcast effect taken off the bumpers and rub strips so that they're smooth like the bodywork. I did half wonder about it for my dad but after speaking to him he doesn't want one.

He feels at the moment that it's priced just right for the amount of interest he's getting.

My Activa was cat C, i have seen hoto's of the damage and it needed a door + trim, a front outer wing and a repeater light, no other damage, the owner at the time had the repair done privatly by a body shop with second hand parts for £600.
I do need a vic check and it will be marked on the V5 as you say David but if you want you can have it removed from the V5 by paying £500 for a soundness check ( ), ie it goes to vosa to make sure the chassis is straight and the repair is AT LEAST as goood as new, then it will just say 'Inspected' on the logbook.

An accident writoff would not bother me if it was body damage, Shell damage i would want to have a good poke first but again if repaired properly it will be as good as new, dont be put off by repaired cars.

Autolign perform the requestit VIC check and although it does incorporate an overal check of the repairs it's mainly just a vehicle identity check (VIC), to ensure it's not just a ringed car.

Insurance companies love issuung cat c for no real reason. No car with panel damage should really be a Cat-C, they should be Cat-D and have no marker.

yeah, bit silly really, im sure he could of insisted on having it repaired too as it was knocked while parked by another driver but its too late now, just costs £50 to get the vic done thats all and then carry on as normal.

I think on principle, I wouldn't let a car get written off for minor, repairable damage. I stopped Mrs Dm's old Fiat being written off when someone hit the back of it.

We did the same when someone went into the back of my dad's 406 Coupe.

Apparently if you're at fault they can write it off, if you're not you can insist on it being repaired.

It does look like a seriously clean car in the pictures, that's for sure.
Shame it's not a Series 1 though - just look so much better!!

Question though, as I'm not that up on XMs!
The exhaust appears to be a twin exit, a la Xantia V6 - was that only on the Series 2s, as I can't quite remember seeing mine having a twin exit one.
...or am I due a visit to Specsavers?

Only S2 have the straight, twin pipes, which are a bit jazzy for an XM really.
