ebay - sphere removal tool??

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

I think I will stick to my home made motorbike chain strap wrench.

Considering that when I changed mine last year I had to beat one for hours with a cold chisel and a 2kg lump hammer before it eventually came loose, I don't think this tool will be up to a really tight sphere. I was getting worried that the chisel was going to actually pierce right through the metal as it 'peeled' a 4mm thick, 30mm long slice out of the thick central band on the sphere.

If I ever get rich enough to replace all the spheres every 2 years, this should do the job fine. ;)

Had you depressurised the system and hit the sphere around it's neck with the hammer. This normally makes them loose enough to undo by hand.

I'd done everything. Pressurised the system, depressurised the system, hit it with hammer, made a 30" long strap wrench thing (which bent when i put a 4ft length of wood on the handle for extra leverage). Repeated everything repeatedly, until eventually, with my arm feeling like it would fall off, it finally gave way and undid.

From memory, a couple of the spheres were dated 199x, so had presumably been on there more than 10 years. Hopefully, the ones I put on won't be quite do hard to get off.

The rears and centre ones on mine were original, I think and they were tight, but I found it was the fluid pressure that was holding them so well.
Obviously the rears need pressure to stop the rams turning, but the centre on came off easily once the pressure was released.

To get the accumulator off, which is the one everyone says is difficult, was childs play. Just ensure there is no pressure at all, then a few taps and unscrew by hand.
