XM Bought means Saab For Sale

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Well this is now sitting on my driveway after a first journey of exactly 100 miles back from South Yorks.

Initial feelings are good :-) It goes very well and "seems" to be economical, but it is far too early to tell that yet. The overall condition of the body is very good, and it has been well polished by its previous owner Les prior to my collection. The service history is mainlt handwritten records of the work done in the original book - completed in different colours to show when it has gone back to the beginning and this is supported by a folder of invoices I haven't had time to look at yet. The Dex 2 was changed at the last (fairly recent) service and the cam belt is four years old and not very many miles about 12k I think without checking.

There are of course concerns and things to address, as you get with any new purchase, but these will have to wait a while as I am having an op on an arthitic finger tomorrow and there is no money until the Saab finds a new home :-(

Most of the niggles are minor, like noisy wipers, poor headlights (of course) and a slightly temperamental central locking system, but my biggest concern is the lumpiness of the car at tickover when in D. This seems excessive to me and I wonder if there may be an engine mount on the way out? On the road it drives smoothly - and I love the spaciousness. I may even get to love the leather interior (as long as the air con keeps working!).

As I've got it now, I've moved this comment to the Members' Cars Board and added a couple of pics.

I think engine mounts are getting tired on most XM now.

I have an SED too, And mine used to almost shake itself to bits idling in D and N. All it needed was the idle to be adjusted and it is soo much better.
But they do shake a bit these Diesels. Mind you if anyone is going to know how they should feel, Dieselman will know!

An auto will always transmit more vibration when in drive, but although these are OK as diesels go, I'm confident that new engine mounts would make things quite a bit better.

I can't remember what the one i had from new was like, it was 1994, though do remember it being noisier than the petrol 2.0Si I had before it.

My Cobalt one is smoother, but less powerful, than my Mandarin one.

Cobalt one Lucas or Bosch?

I find the Bosch equipt engines are a little bit "Louder" on the combustion.. but is longer lived and tougher.. but the Lucas equipt engines do combust quiter, but also do perform better then the Bosch cars. Lucas pumps dont like anything for fuel EXCEPT Diesel...

Mandarin = Lucas, Cobalt = Bosch.

I find the reverse, Lucas is not as refined, so maybe it's just engine mounts after all, though I think the timing is a bit more advanced on the Lucas equipped one.
