Ah but the car has not sold yet Russ! I think £3-4K may be optimistic for a S2 24v, even with a low mileage and nice condition! Regards, Matthew T.
That's what I mean, too strong a price and it's not going to sell. Agree with Neil, couple of grand is realistic, unless it's practically showroom/ factory fresh and can justify £3k plus.

Rob wants around £1400 for a well looked after car with 154k on it. That suggests the other guy wants an extra £3k for 100k miles less and a X plate. He has to justify that to me and he can't. My money stays firmly in my pocket.

I have now colleced my "new" car and so the XM will have to become SORN and uninsured for the road after this weekend, so if anyone is wanting a test drive it needs to be soon!

Im not really understanding this and other V6's on the market at the moment, if your looking for an XM these days its because you want a toy, if you want a toy your not using much its got to be a V6 really and yet they just are not selling while almost every other engine type seems to shift just fine, even a 2.0i sold for near 3k recently and at about 1k you dont even get a sniff.

Really odd

I agree that there does not seem to be a lot of interest in the V6 model Dean and especially the earlier engine which I also find surprising while all my cars are daily drives and certainly not toys!! With regards, Matthew T.

They are toys Matthew, i must disagree, its not a car chosen by a sane mind as transport from A to B it is a purchase of the heart because you want one and its a labour of love keeping them on the road, you may use them but they are still toys.

We may disagree on that but V6's not selling just boggles my mind, its always been that the highest priced examples of any car are the rare models and the most powerfull, nobody wants a Mitsubishi Gallant 1.6i and you can buy one for £5, but the V6 VR4 still holds good money for an old bus.

With the XM we had a 2.0si sell for nearly 3k recently but V6's are languishing for sale for a little over a grand with not a sniff although lots of watchers, i dont understand.

I totally agree with Dean. An XM is not a sane choice at all for someone purely wanting a vehicle to get them from A to B. These days, they're an enthusiasts car, and are kept on the road by enthusiasts and specialists alike. I use mine as my daily driver, but I know fine well that it's a specialist car and requires a lot of my free time to be spent on it, in order to keep it that way.

The V6 may just be down to people thinking that the overall running costs of the V6 will amount to more than the other variants of the XM. Insurance cost, tax, more thirsty on the juice etc. In general, however, you just have to look around to know what sort of cars are selling these days, and it isn't big, thirsty old battle cruisers. It's the opposite - small, economical, cheap to insure 'hot hatches'. Yes, you do get big Audi's, BMW's and Merc's on the road, but you can be sure as damnit that a great deal of them are company owned, rather than privately owned.

I agree with Dean too. I admire you endlessly Matthew for using yours day to day. But for me they are a hobby, a toy and a complete labour of love keeping them going.
It is strange how V6 isn't admired more, possibly reputation, maybe it's lack of understanding of the model. It might all change eventually.

Whether my XMs are toys or not they are my car of choice and a practical workhorse, albeit more expensive to run with a V6 under the bonnet! For a 25+ year old car the reliability is really pretty good and much of the work I do is fettling rather than being critical to keep them on the road. Other reasons for having a XM apart from the style and comfort are the practicalities of size since with three growing children we need a large car, plus the hatchback and reclining seats makes loading easy and the capacity is very impressive. In terms of running costs the tax on my XM is less than my Dad's 10 year old Nissan Primera and a lot less than a C6 and other equivalent-sized modern cars. Regards, Matthew T.
