These could have been very early pre production cars.

Robert I tend to agree with you, as it may have been a 'dealer/show vehicle' just to show the XM 'in the Flesh' prior to the actual Correct to spec. for the UK but then got sold/registered and hence its existence !robert_e_smart wrote:These could have been very early pre production cars.
Shame I never made a note of the full reg. number to see it still lives on DVLA 'Vehicle enquiry' data base ?
I also remember the guy having it up For Sale in the Derby/Notts 'Ad-mag' a couple of years after I first saw it (He lived @ Sinfin/Derby), But I doubt its still registered and living

I suspect the car was a grey import as the 2.2D wasn't sold marketed by Citroen UK.

Might be interesting to check out the original spec for my 2.0SEi.
All I can lay my hands on at present is the engine number which was the 59th produced in the series.
That and the fact that the rear subframe needed weld repairs in Sept 1999 at 55k miles.
Reg was G465WDV.
Likely to be a very early UK car particularly as UK launch was 6 months after the French one.
We have come across pre launch UK Mk2's with non standard features so Robert may be right.
Found the service book now.
Dealer failed to write in the RP no.
Chassis was listed as 03AC0694.
Colour code EVE.
Date of first registration 31/3/90, date of purchase 2/4/90.

The 2.1 turbo is only 2088cc. but is 110HP.
Interesting the pre-production thinking. I had a C6 on test in 2006 and the delivery driver said to me that the pre-production car I had, was to be broken up for parts. Shame. Times have changed, no longer can you sell on a complete pre-production car it seems.

Pre-production cars and pre launch production are different items.
Pre-production comprises a relatively small number of cars produced well before launch for various reasons.
They can turn up in all sorts of places in the supply chain for various reasons.
Staff training, reliability testing and customer reaction to be but a few of the possible uses.
Some will need registering to allow some of those uses.
That the odd one avoids the claimed Citroen cull after use edict would not be that surprising.
Pre-launch production is essential to have sufficient carefully shrouded but distributed stock available for launch day.
The pre-launch Mk2's I mentioned can be identified by RPN which predate launch day.
In the early stages of a production line mods come thick and fast.
Only a few need to be retrospective and that is dealt with by car recall.
I doubt any pre-launch UK XM's had 3.5mm suspension.
The odd pre-production one might have though.

Thanks John, that is very true. The C6 I had was a pre-launch one then. Makes perfect sense.
That would be fascinating finding a pre-production XM, for complete scarcity alone.
